Softball Sweeps the Bears Behind 15-Run Inning, 25 Runs Scored in Total

The Monarchs will host Schoolcraft Tuesday (May 9) in the 2023 season finale

FLINT, Mich. – Macomb Softball went on the road for the final time this season Monday (May 8) and celebrated their last road trip together with a doubleheader sweep over Mott to extend their winning streak to five games and push their record to 21-19 overall and 15-13 in the MCCAA East. The Monarchs won game one by a 19-5 final tally after exploding for 15 runs in the eighth inning. The Blue & White earned a 6-4 victory in the nightcap behind steady pitching and a pair of three-run innings.

Monday's sweep also gave the Monarchs the season series victory over the Bears, four games to two.

GAME ONE: Macomb 19, Mott 5 (8 inn.)
This one might be for the record books… When was the last time a team won by 14 runs in extra innings? Well, it happened today as the Monarchs broke open a 4-4 tie with a 15-run eighth inning to post a 19-5 victory in the opener. The Monarchs recorded 20 hits in the 19-run outburst and used a couple errors by the Bears to continue to pour it on late in the eighth inning.

Samantha Scott (Romeo, Mich./Eisenhower) paced the red-hot Monarchs with four hits and tied for the team-high with three RBIs. Elizabeth Townsend (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) followed Scott with three hits each. Townsend recorded a double as part of her three-hit opener and also tied for the team lead with three RBIs. Haley Mitchell (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) joined Scott and Townsend for the RBI lead with three of her own and did so on a two-hit effort that included an eighth inning double that helped break the game open.

Four other Monarchs posted two hits each as Brynn Beyer (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North), Savanna Clark (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair), Danielle Erickson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) and Katelyn Thomas (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) all tallied a pair of hits and scored two runs each.

Carly Sierzenga (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) got the start and struck out two batters, while Katelynn Fraser (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) came on for the final 4.2 innings to earn the win. Fraser only allowed one earned run and scattered six hits during her time in the circle Monday afternoon.

GAME TWO: Macomb 6, Mott 4
While it wasn't a 15-run eruption, the Monarchs made a late charge once again, this time bringing three runners in to score in the sixth inning to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 lead. The three-run sixth inning was all game two starter Allison Vogt (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) needed as the first-year right-handed pitcher shut the door on the Bears late as part of a complete-game victory that included eight strikeouts.

The win was Vogt's 12th on the season – the most by any freshman in the MCCAA East and a total good for second overall in the conference.

Katelyn Thomas continued her strong day with a team-best three hits in the 6-4 victory, including an RBI single that helped cap off a three-run third inning that gave the Monarchs a 3-1 lead early in the game. Thomas was also one of four Monarchs to connect on a double in game two.

Brynn Beyer, Carleigh Bilpo (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) and Danielle Erickson followed with two hits each with Bilpo driving in a team-best two runs and Erickson following with an RBI of her own. Bilpo and Erickson joined Thomas with a double in the nightcap, as did Samantha Scott.

Erickson's RBI single in the sixth inning would stand as the game winner, while an RBI single one batter earlier by Savanna Clark was the game-tying base knock.
