SLOW START DOOMS MONARCHS IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCHUP

WARREN, Mich. – The four-match winning streak for Macomb Volleyball came to an end Thursday (Sept. 30) after the Monarchs suffered a five-set, non-conference setback to the visiting Madonna Crusaders Reserves by set scores of 16-25, 15-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 9-15. The five-set loss drops the Monarchs record to 7-5 overall.

Down 2-0 to start the match, the Monarchs put their heart on display by battling all the way back to force a deciding fifth set. The slow start proved to be too much, however, as the Crusaders edged the Monarchs in the final set by a 15-9 tally.

The Monarchs were led by freshman middle and former MCCAA Player of the Week, Natalie Husson (Marysville, Mich./Marysville), who posted a team-best 13 kills (one error) on 22 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage. Husson was followed closely by Ja'Nae Davis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights) and Kara Lewicki (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) with 11 kills each. Lewicki racked up her third double-double of the season after adding 16 digs to her 11-kill night.

Emily Langlois (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) pushed her weekly aces total to 11 after adding five more Thursday to go along with 34 assists and 10 digs. The back row tandem of Khloee Stoll (Macomb, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Juliana Bollini (Washington, Mich./Romeo) rounded out the top performers for the Monarchs with 39 and 19 digs, respectively.

Despite Thursday's setback, the Monarchs remain unblemished in the MCCAA Eastern Conference and will return to league action Tuesday (Oct. 5) on the road at St. Clair County Community College. Prior to Tuesday's conference match, the Monarchs will take part in the Raider Challenge, hosted by Grand Rapids Community College, this Saturday and Sunday. The Monarchs are slated to play at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 2) and will turn around to play two more on Sunday (Oct. 3) with matches at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Grand Rapids Community College has announced that fans are not permitted this weekend.
