SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – After an extended break from game action, Macomb Volleyball was back on the court Wednesday (Sept. 8) for a road matinee match at Lawrence Tech University (LTU). The Monarchs made the most of their trip down I-696 and earned a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-10, 25-13) over LTU's JV behind a well-balanced team effort.
With the road victory, the Monarchs push their record to 2-1 on the young season. LTU's JV fell to 0-2 after the 3-0 setback.
Kara Lewicki (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) was impressive once again for the Monarchs as the sophomore posted a team-high-tying seven kills to go along with 12 digs and an ace. Lewicki – an All-Region selection a season ago – has tallied 22 digs and 17 kills through three matches this season.
Freshman middle Natalie Husson (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) put together arguably the best performance of the afternoon, and certainly her personal best at the collegiate level, by tying Lewicki with seven kills (no errors) on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage. The Marysville product also added two blocks to help the Monarchs secure the straight-sets victory. Kellogg Community College transfer Erika Knieper (Marshall, Mich./Noblesville) followed right behind Husson and Lewicki with six kills on 13 attempts, while reigning All-MCCAA Eastern Conference selection Ja'Nae Davis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights) chipped in nicely with four kills on nine attempts, two digs and an ace.
Emily Langlois (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) put her teammates in good position all afternoon on her way to collecting 17 assists on the Monarchs' 28 kills. Langlois was active all around the court, adding five digs, a pair of kills and an ace in three sets of action.
The Monarchs were sound defensively, paced by libero Khloee Stoll (Macomb, Mich./Anchor Bay) who led the charge in the back row with 14 digs, while Juliana Bollini (Washington, Mich./Romeo), who donned the libero jersey for the final set, added 11 digs to round out the list of Monarchs who notched double-digit digs.
Samantha Olson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) led all Monarchs with four aces on the afternoon, while Kiersten Myles (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) added three assists and Haley Link (New Baltimore, Mich./Lutheran North) tallied a pair of kills in the non-conference road win.
The Monarchs will reset quickly and hit the road for Ann Arbor Thursday (Sept. 9) for a 7 p.m. first serve with Concordia JV. From there, the Monarchs have three matches Sunday (Sept. 12) as they take part in the Madonna University Quad beginning at 9:30 a.m. Note: there is no live coverage scheduled at this time by any host school the remainder of the week.
The 2021 home opener is next Tuesday (Sept. 14) when the Monarchs host Mott Community College for a 7:00 p.m. first serve. Macomb Athletics will provide a live stream and live stats coverage on www.MacombMonarchs.com/Watch beginning at 6:45 p.m.
