WARREN, Mich. – A record-breaking night! Freshman guard Tariq Humes (Farmington, Mich./Elevation Prep) was unstoppable Wednesday (Jan. 12) on his way to breaking three single-game program records in a 114-63 victory for No. 16 Macomb Men's Basketball over Alpena Community College. Humes poured in a historic 55 points to lead the Monarchs (12-1, 2-0 MCCAA East) over the visiting Lumberjacks, doing so on 20-of-28 shooting overall and a red-hot 10-of-16 effort from 3-point territory.
All three set new single-game program records – Most Points: 55, Most Field Goals Made: 20, Most 3-Pointers Made: 10.
Former Monarch great Dwight Burton held the previous single-game scoring record (40 points).
As for Wednesday's 51-point league win, the Monarchs took a few possessions to heat up and then the scoring barrage began for Humes and Co. as the Blue & White raced out to a 52-28 halftime lead. Humes kept pace with the visitors early and often, netting 22 points over the game's opening 20 minutes to help the Monarchs secure the large halftime lead.
Humes followed his first half 22-point effort with 33 second half points to undoubtedly earn the best single-game performance in Macomb Men's Basketball history. The 55-point total helped the Monarchs lead grow to as many as 53 Wednesday before the Blue & White earned the 114-63 victory.
While Humes enjoyed his historic night, four other Monarchs reached double figures scoring, led by reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Elijah Belle (Detroit, Mich./Davenport). Belle continued his strong play with 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the long line and added six assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals in 24 minutes, while Tom McNelis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) and Delano Williams (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Mt. Clemens) tallied 11 points each. McNelis dished out six assists to go along with five rebounds and three steals and Williams recorded four steals and three boards as part of well-rounded nights for the Monarchs.
Jiovanni Miles (Novi, Mich./Wisconsin-Green Bay) showcased his usual balanced play with 10 points, six assists, four steals and three rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
As for Humes, the record-breaking freshman also added five assists, five rebounds and three steals to cap off an unbelievable performance.
