WARREN, Mich. – A five-game winning streak for Macomb Women's Basketball came to an end Saturday (Jan. 22) as Schoolcraft College erased a halftime deficit to defeat the Monarchs, 60-50. The loss, only the Monarchs second in their past 11 games, drops the Blue & White to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in MCCAA East action.
The setback also ended one of the best runs in league history as the Monarchs suffered their first MCCAA Eastern Conference loss since Feb. 25, 2019.
The Monarchs held a 27-21 halftime lead as their patented team defense held the visiting Ocelots (8-4, 3-2 MCCAA East) to under 30% shooting and only nine field goals over the opening 20 minutes of play. In the third quarter, the Monarchs got off to a hot start, draining back-to-back 3-pointers to extend their lead to 33-21. The Ocelots took over from there, outscoring the Monarchs 20-7 the remainder of the third quarter to take a 41-40 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Monarchs and Ocelots engaged in a back-and-forth battle before the visitors ended the game on a 13-2 run over the final six minutes to earn the 10-point win.
DeBraya Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Roseville) led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds to go along with five steals and three assists in 34 minutes of play. Edwards was followed by Amari Davis-Dobbs (Eastpointe, Mich./Lincoln) who dropped in 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting and added two rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) recorded nine points and a pair of assists, while Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) tallied seven points and pulled down seven boards.
Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) grabbed 10 rebounds and chipped in offensively with six points in a hard-fought game for the Monarchs.
The Monarchs have a quick turnaround as the Blue & White travel to Delta College Monday (Jan. 24) for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
