HIGHLIGHTS

WARREN, Mich. –
Macomb Women's Basketball improved to 5-1 on the season with an impressive, 53-31, wire-to-wire home victory over the Glen Oaks Community College Vikings Tuesday (Nov. 22) in Warren. Amy Jackson paced the Monarchs with 17 points, 15 of which came on five three pointers, and Valina Hudgins recorded 12 points and six rebounds in the 22-point win.

Up 10-4 after one quarter of play, the Monarchs continued to make things difficult offensively for the visitors and held the Vikings to 12 points over the game's opening 20 minutes to take a 28-12 lead into the halftime break. The Monarchs held the Vikings to 12.9% shooting in the opening half and forced 10 turnovers.

Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) was red-hot early and outscored the Vikings on her own by scoring 14 of her game-high 17 points in the first half on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point territory.

Second half action saw the Vikings cut the deficit from 16 to 13 after three quarters of play, but the Monarchs responded with a dominant fourth quarter to outscore the visitors 15-6 and earn the 22-point win.

In total, the Monarchs held the Vikings to 16.7% shooting for the game, including a 10.7% mark from three-point land. The battle on the boards ended in a tie, 46-46, but the Monarchs capitalized on their offensive rebounds and posted 15-6 edge in second chance points.

Jackson's 17 led all scorers while Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) was the only other player in double figures for both teams with 12 points. Jackson poured in five triples and added seven rebounds and three assists to help lead the Monarchs to victory. Jasmine Ellis (Hazel Park, Mich./Michigan Math & Science) and reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Tamia Tounsel (Shelby Twp., Mich./Dakota), each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds in the winning effort, while Jaelynn Jones (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) grabbed seven boards of her own while leading the team in assists with five and steals with four.

Talia Krause (Clinton Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) and Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) both connected on a pair of timely triples in the latter stages of the game on their way to tallying six points each, while Hannah Roberts (Roseville, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) grabbed three rebounds (two offensive) for a shorthanded Monarchs team that put forth a stellar 40-minute effort.

The Monarchs will have the rest of the week off from game action and will return to the court Tuesday (Nov. 29) at Madonna JV. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Livonia.
