BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – Paced by an amazing performance out of sophomore guard
Rylee Thomas, Macomb Women's Basketball earned a hard-fought 75-66 win over the Southwestern Michigan College Roadrunners Friday (Nov. 4) at Lake Michigan College's Red Hawk Showcase. Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) poured in a career-high 28 points and did so on a historic eight three pointers made. Thomas' eight triples tied for second in a single game in program history with Alicia Bullaro who netted eight on Feb. 20, 2019, and was one shy of the program record of nine made by former All-American Emily Swiercz on Feb. 28, 2020.
Thomas' historic performance helped propel the Monarchs to 2-0 on the young season. The Roadruners ended the night with an even 1-1 record.
Down 19-17 after one quarter of play and 33-32 at the halftime break, the Monarchs made adjustments and capitalized in the third quarter by outscoring the Roadrunners 24-16 in the frame. The eight-point advantage in the third quarter helped put the Monarchs in front by seven, 56-49, entering the final 10 minutes of play.
In the fourth quarter, the Monarchs' defense made key stops and the offense made timely shots to help secure the nine point win in the neutral-site environment.
While Thomas' 28 points and eight triples (8-of-10 3PM) led the way, sophomore forward
Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) had a strong night of her own with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshmen
Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) and
Jaelynn Jones (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) provided great balance in the victory with Richards recording nine points, a team-best nine rebounds and seven assists and Jones adding nine points, four assists and four boards.
The balanced play extended throughout the roster as the Monarchs took home a 35-16 edge in bench scoring in Friday's win.
The Monarchs wrap up the weekend Saturday (Nov. 5) with a 3 p.m. tip-off against the showcase host Red Hawks of Lake Michigan College.
