#5 Monarchs Cruise in Final Tune-Up Before This Weekend's Battles With NJCAA D1 Top-25 Opponents

The Monarchs will be put to the test this weekend at the Vincennes McDonald's Classic

HIGHLIGHTS

WARREN, Mich. – Antonio King
had a career-high and game-high 21 points on 10-of-19 shooting to lead five in double figures as the fifth-ranked Monarchs cruised past Washtenaw Community College, 113-34, Tuesday (Nov. 8) in Warren. The 79-point margin of victory is the largest in program history, eclipsing the previous record of 78 by one set during the 1983-84 season.

Tuesday's win lifted the NJCAA D2 No. 5 Monarchs to 4-0 on the young season.

The Monarchs will take their 4-0 record on the road this weekend when they take part in Vincennes University's McDonald's Classic. The host and NJCAA D1 No. 23 Trailblazers await the Monarchs Friday at 7:00 p.m., while a date with NJCAA D1 No. 13 John A. Logan follows on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be streamed live by Vincennes here.

On Tuesday, the No. 5 Monarchs jumped out to a 53-12 halftime lead and eventually won by 79 in the 113-34 decision. On top of posting a game-high 21 points, King (Southfield, Mich./Southfield A&T) also pulled down six rebounds and handed out five assists in 24 minutes of action. Fellow Southfield A&T product Cameron McEvans followed with 15 points to go along with six assists and six rebounds, and Shawn Brown (Oak Park, Mich./Oak Park) recorded a new career-high with 14 points and added eight rebounds in the win.

Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) equaled Brown with 14 points, doing so in 11 minutes on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point territory, while Justin James (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Not to be overlooked in the win was the outstanding performance of Tom McNelis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser). The sophomore wing was all over the court and nearly posted a quadruple-double with nine assists, nine rebounds, seven points and seven steals in only 21 minutes Tuesday evening.

In all, the Monarchs shot 51.7% for the game and held the visiting Wolfpack to 34 points on 22.6% shooting.
