Seven in a Row! Monarchs Extend Streak by Winning Triple Overtime Thriller, 77-71!

The seventh straight win lifts the Monarchs record to 10-1 on the season!

WARREN, Mich. – After 15 minutes of extra basketball and a host of phenomenal plays on both ends of the floor, Macomb Women's Basketball earned a thrilling triple overtime victory over the visiting Alma College Reserve Scots by a 77-71 final Wednesday (Dec. 14) in Warren. The impressive triple overtime victory extended the Monarchs winning streak to seven games and elevated the team's record to 10-1 on the campaign.

The Monarchs got off to a fast start, leading 14-4 after one and 32-16 at the halftime break. The Scots battled back in the second half and eventually erased the halftime deficit behind a 19-8 edge in the fourth quarter and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Scots knocked down another late 3-pointer, this one with six seconds to go to push the game into a second overtime period. In double overtime, Tamia Tounsel (Shelby Twp., Mich./Dakota) made the biggest shot of the night in a game that featured its fair share of big shots when she drained a buzzer-beating jumper to send the game into a third overtime.

In triple overtime, Tounsel made back-to-back buckets in the paint to extend the Monarchs lead to 75-71 and the Monarch defense did the rest from there as the Blue & White earned the 77-71 victory.

Before Tounsel caught fire late, Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) was the hot hand early as the sophomore guard buried her first four 3-pointers on her way to posting 14 first half points. Thomas ended the game with a team-high 19 points on a 7-of-13 shooting performance overall and a 5-of-11 clip from downtown. Freshman guard Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) was next in the scoring column with 12 points and facilitated the offense soundly with a team-best six assists.

Tounsel posted the Monarchs' lone double-double with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) tallied an equal 11 points and added eight rebounds to accompany a team-high six steals in the thrilling victory.

Jasmine Ellis (Hazel Park, Mich./Michigan Math & Science) followed with seven points and three rebounds, while Jaelynn Jones (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) and Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) checked in with six points each. Jones added five rebounds to her six-point night and Jackson grabbed four boards to go along with four assists and a pair of steals.

Ryleigh Sanom (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) posted a balanced line of four assists, three points, three rebounds and three steals and Hannah Roberts (Roseville, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) rounded it out for the Monarchs with two points, a rebound and a steal.

The red-hot Monarchs will be back in action at home Saturday (Dec. 17) against a tough Kalamazoo Valley Community College team. The Cougars will come to Warren with a 5-3 record and winners of two straight after topping Mott by an 83-75 final Wednesday in Kalamazoo.
