WARREN, Mich. – For the first time since the 1983-84 season, Macomb Men's Basketball stands alone atop its MCCAA Conference as outright champions! With Friday's (Feb. 25) 75-59 victory over Oakland Community College, the Monarchs capped off a historic regular season under the direction of first year head coach Hassan Nizam, winning the MCCAA Eastern Conference outright with a league record of 13-3 (23-4) overall.
The conference title is the fourth overall in Macomb Men's Basketball history and only the second outright championship. The Monarchs won shared MCCAA Conference titles in the 1981-82 and 1992-93 campaigns and outright league championships in the 1983-84 and 2021-22 seasons.
Friday's win culminated a season few saw coming, as evidenced by the MCCAA East's preseason coaches' poll that slotted the Monarchs to finish eighth out of nine teams in the league. Inside the gym and within the program, the Monarchs envisioned winning the championship and earned the historic title thanks to hours of hard work by a cast of talented players and coaches.
As for the Friday's game, the Monarchs showcased their championship mettle once again, overcoming a slow start to earn the 16-point victory over a battle-tested OCC team.
