FLINT, Mich. – The magical 2021-22 season – Hassan Nizam's first at the helm – came to an end Saturday (March 5) in an 85-78 loss to Henry Ford in the Great Lakes District B Championship. The Monarchs end their season at 25-5 overall while Henry Ford improved to 25-7 with the win.
The Monarchs made plenty of history in year one under Nizam's leadership, winning the program's first MCCAA Championship while also capturing the program's second outright MCCAA Eastern Conference title (fourth overall).
Saturday's district title tilt was a back-and-forth battle in the first half with the Hawks earning a two-point edge at the break, 36-34. In the second half, the Hawks caught fire, shooting 60% from the floor and 63.6% from 3-point territory. For the game, the Hawks shot 51.6% overall and 44.4% from deep. The Monarchs got 45.3% of their shots to drop and shot 33.3% from 3-point land.
Tariq Humes (Farmington, Mich./Elevation Prep) paced four Monarchs in double figures with 19 points, while Jiovanni Miles (Novi, Mich./Wisconsin-Green Bay) recorded 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. John Ukomadu (Bloomfield, Mich./Vincennes) tallied 12 of his 15 points in the second half and added nine rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks in 32 minutes of action. Jaylen Daughtery (Detroit, Mich./Mott CC) was next with 11 points, while Elijah Belle (Detroit, Mich./Davenport) and Delano Williams (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Mt. Clemens) followed with nine and seven points, respectively. Tom McNelis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) pulled down five boards and dished out two assists in hard-fought minutes for the Monarchs.
