MARYSVILLE, Mich. – The weather was cold and the bats were on fire Saturday (April 16) in Macomb Softball's road split with the Skippers of SC4 at Marysville City Park. The Monarchs started hot with a 10-4 game one victory behind four home runs and continued hitting through game two despite falling by a 20-12 final score.
GAME ONE: Macomb 10, SC4 4
The Monarchs bounced back from Friday's setback to Schoolcraft in a big way by defeating the Skippers, 10-4, in the series opener. Jackie Seyfarth (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) got the start and picked up her fourth win of the campaign after putting together a stellar performance. Seyfarth held the Skippers at bay with a season-high seven strikeouts and the Monarchs offense did the rest in the game one victory.
Before Seyfarth stepped in the circle, the Monarchs bats were firing on all cylinders as Danielle Erickson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) got the offensive fireworks going with a lead-off home run. Erickson's home run, her second of the season, was the first of four home runs in game one for the Monarchs and gave the Blue & White a 1-0 lead before fans settled into their seats.
Jenna Casey (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay), Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) and Elizabeth Townsend (Ira Twp., Mich./Anchor Bay) also homered for the Monarchs in the 10-4 victory with Casey and Townsend hammering two-run blasts and Thomas a solo shot. For Casey and Townsend, their home runs brought their season total to five each – tied for best on the team.
Along with her solo home run, Thomas also had a two-RBI single as part a 2-for-4 effort with a team-best three RBIs. Samantha Scott (Romeo, Mich./Eisenhower) was a perfect 4-for-4, while Erickson went 4-for-5 and added a double to a stat line that included her lead-off home run.
GAME TWO: SC4 20, Macomb 12
SC4 got the best of the Monarchs in game two to earn the split behind a 20-12 final tally in six innings. The Monarchs recorded an impressive eight extra-base hits in the game two setback, led by triples from Nicole Husken (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) and Emma Lautenbach (Warren, Mich./Center Line). Jenna Casey and Samantha Scott continued their offensive tear with two doubles each in Saturday's second game, while Danielle Erickson and Carly Sierzenga (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) followed with one double each.
Erickson paced all Monarchs with four RBIs on a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Scott checked in with a mirrored 3-for-4 effort, adding three RBIs, and Husken went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs as part of a well-rounded game.
