Back on Track! Monarchs Go 2-0 Friday at the Owens Invite

Riley Fisette paced the attack with 22 kills on the day

PERRYSBURG, Ohio – Now that's how you bounce back! Following a tough conference setback earlier in the week, Macomb Volleyball went back to work in the limited practice time they had and the results showed with a pair of four-set victories over NJCAA Region XII counterparts, Cuyahoga Community College and Edison State Community College, Friday (Sept. 2) at the Owens Invite. With the wins, the Monarchs improved to 3-2 on the young season.

MATCH ONE: Macomb 3, Cuyahoga 1
The Monarchs raced out to a 2-0 lead and, after dropping the third set, posted an emphatic 25-9 win in set four to earn a 3-1 victory over the Triceratops of Cuyahoga Community College. An 11-kill, one-error effort in the opening set the tone for the match, while the Monarchs' 11-kill, three-error fourth set closed out the contest.

Riley Fisette (Chesterfield, Mich/L'Anse Creuse North) enjoyed her best match at the collegiate level with a team-best 10 kills on 20 attempts for a .450 hitting percentage in the opening win at the Owens Invite. Fisette added a pair of block assists as part of a busy defensive day at the net once again for the Blue & White. Jordan Turner (Highland Park, Mich./Wilmington Univ.) and Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) anchored the action at the net with six block assists each, while Olivia Kulka (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) made her presence known against the Triceratops with five block assists.

Natalie Husson (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) record five kills (no errors) and three block assists as part of a well-rounded match and fellow returner Khloee Stoll (Macomb, Mich./Anchor Bay) led the back row with 20 of the team's 33 digs. Becca Weiss (Dryden, Mich./Dryden) continued her strong start the collegiate level with 17 assists and seven digs in the four-set victory.

MATCH TWO: Macomb 3, Edison State 1
The Monarchs earned a hard-fought, four-set victory over the Chargers of Edison State in Friday's nightcap. After splitting the first two sets, the Monarchs willed their way to a 29-27 triumph in the third set and finished off the Chargers behind a 25-20 victory in set four.

Riley Fisette continued her impressive day with 12 more kills in Friday's finale. The freshman recorded a line of 12 kills and a .267 hitting percentage to amass 22 kills on the day. Fisette was followed by Jordan Turner who notched eight kills and seven block assists as part of an equally impressive afternoon on the court. Natalie Husson and Chante Hudgins combined for nine block assists, while Khloee Stoll and Haile Polisano (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) teamed up for 37 digs. Polisano added seven kills, while Stoll posted a team-best three aces. Becca Weiss and Kaylee Lathrop (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) recorded 20 digs and 11 digs, respectively, in the victory.

UP NEXT: National Champs Inbound
The Monarchs will return to Owens Community College for day two at the Owens Invite Saturday (Sept. 3). The competition gets turned up a notch as reigning NJCAA Division II National Champion and current No. 3 team nationally, Parkland College, awaits at 11:30 a.m., while defending NJCAA Division III title holder and sixth-ranked Owens Community College will wrap up the Monarchs action in Ohio at 4:00 p.m. No live stream will be available.
