WARREN, Mich. – Grosse Pointe South product
Kamryn Richards poured in a career-high and game-high 21 points on seven 3-pointers to lead Macomb Women's Basketball to a 64-47 home victory over the Hawks of Henry Ford College Wednesday (Jan. 18) at the Sports & Expo Center. The win lifts the Monarchs record to 11-3 overall and evens their early season conference record at 1-1.
The Hawks fell to 2-12 with the 17-point setback.
While it won't show up in the win column, the Monarchs received another big victory with the return of former World Exposure Report All-American and All-Region, All-MCCAA guard
Rayonna Armstrong (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy). After suffering a season-ending injury in the 2021-22 opener, Armstrong made her return and wasted no time making an impact by tallying nine points on three 3-pointers to help the Monarchs earn the win.
The Monarchs started Wednesday's conference tilt strong and jumped out to a 24-15 lead after the first quarter and a 39-22 advantage at the halftime break. The 17-point halftime lead was the difference as the Monarchs and Hawks exchanged baskets in the second half in the 64-47 Monarch win.
The effort on the glass helped key the Monarchs win as the Blue & White corralled a season-high 65 rebounds, led by 13 from
Tamia Tounsel (Shelby Twp., Mich./Dakota) and 12 by
Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln).
Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) followed with eight boards and was one of three Monarchs in double figures scoring with 10 points.
Jaelynn Jones (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) matched Jackson with 10 points of her own on 5-of-8 shooting and added a team-high-tying four steals.
Jasmine Ellis (Hazel Park, Mich./Michigan Math & Science) and
Hannah Roberts (Roseville, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) ripped down six rebounds each, while
Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) added three points, two rebounds and an assist.
The story of the night, offensively, was the hot hand and well-rounded play of
Kamryn Richards. The freshman guard knocked down seven 3-pointers—a total that ties for third in program history for most threes in a game—on her way to a career-best 21 points. Richards added seven assists, five rebounds and four steals in 35 minutes of work to pace the Monarchs to their 11th win of the campaign
The Monarchs hit the road for the first time in conference play Saturday (Jan. 21) when they visit Mott Community College for a 1 p.m. tip-off. Saturday's game will be played on the campus of Mott CC inside Ballenger Fieldhouse (1401 E. Court St., Flint).
