PORT HURON, Mich. – For the second time in as many games, Macomb Women's Basketball put its grit on display as the Monarchs battled back from a slow start to earn a 61-55 road win at St. Clair County Community College (SC4). The win lifts the Monarchs to 3-1 in MCCAA Eastern Conference play and 13-3 overall.
SC4 fell to 11-8 overall and 2-2 in league play with the home setback.
Down 17-6 after one quarter of play, the Monarchs bounced back quickly and outscored SC4 by nine in the second quarter (15-6) to cut the deficit to two at the half, 23-21. The Monarchs closed the gap in the second quarter with hot shooting from deep as the Blue & White knocked down four 3-pointers in the period (six total in the first half).
The Monarchs trailed by as many as 14 points late in the first quarter before the offense got rolling and eventually made it a one-possession game at the break.
The hot shooting second quarter was a sign of things to come as the Monarchs shot over 50% from the field in the second half to earn the six-point victory. After an even third quarter, the Monarchs outscored SC4 in the fourth, 24-16, behind 58% shooting and a defensive effort that held the hosts to 36% shooting from the floor.
Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) posted a game-high 17 points on five 3-pointers and added five rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) followed Jackson with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point land and
Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) added 12 points to round out the double digit scorers for the Monarchs.
Richards and Thomas both dished out a team-leading four assists, while
Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) paced the action on the glass once again with a team-best eight rebounds.
After two conference games on the road, the Monarchs return home to host Oakland Community College Saturday (Jan. 28). Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. at the Sports & Expo Center.
