BY THE NUMBERS: 7
The Monarchs traveled to The Hawkeye State and came home with a 1-1 record after narrowly dropping an 83-79 decision to the host and now sixth-ranked Ellsworth Panthers and later cruising past RV Iowa Western by a 95-73 final.
Marlon Williams erupted in the 22-point win, going a perfect
7-of-
7 from the floor for a game-high 19 points.
BY THE NUMBERS: 10
After posting a 1-1 record to move to 2-1 on the season, the Monarchs remained in the top
10 at No.
10 in this week's NJCAA Division II Rankings. The Monarchs first opponent in Iowa, Ellsworth, moved all the way up to No. 6 nationally, while the second opponent, Iowa Western, checked in nationally in the receiving votes (RV) section.
MAXEY COMES UP BIG IN IOWA
How about the play of
Juwan Maxey in Iowa! The sophomore guard was dialed in all weekend and knocked down five triples as part of a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists against the new No. 6 Ellsworth. Maxey followed that effort with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists in the 22-point win over RV Iowa Western.
BATTLED TOUGH
The Monarchs fought through adversity over the weekend to come away with a 1-1 record. Against the host Panthers, the Monarchs battled through extreme foul trouble after being called for 32 fouls (tied a program record). The fouls led to 42 free throws for the home team compared to 24 for the Monarchs in the four-point setback. The Monarchs bounced back in style Saturday to down Iowa Western by a 95-73 final.
A LOOK AT: DELTA
The Delta Pioneers have opened the season strong and enter the week with a perfect 3-0 record. The Pioneers have reached the century mark in two of their three games and are shooting 59.3% from the field in games where stats have been reported. Lewis Covile (16 PPG) and Jamahl Trice (15 PPG) lead six Pioneers in double figures.
A LOOK AT: CBG PREP
Not much is known about the Monarchs' second opponent of the week, CBG Prep, aside from the prep school visiting Warren earlier this season for a neutral-site game against Cuyahoga. In that game, Cuyahoga would roll to a 127-67 win over CBG Prep.
BALANCED SCORING
One of the Monarchs' strengths this season is their depth and the ability for anyone on the roster to lead the team on any given night. Through three games, six players are averaging 10+ points per game (PPG):
Juwan Maxey (17.3),
Parker Day (13.7),
Tymias Williams (13.3),
Justin James (12.7),
Josh Hines (11.3) and
Marlon Williams (10.7).
DISTRIBUTING THE BALL
The Monarchs have amassed 66 assists through three games on 107 made field goals. The 22 assist per game average is a product of team basketball as the Monarchs have four players averaging over three assists per game, leading to equally balanced scoring production. Pacing the team in total assists through three games is
Justin James with 13, followed by
Juwan Maxey and
Tymias Williams with 11 each.
EXTENDED TIME AWAY
After this week's pair of home games, the Monarchs will not host a game inside the friendly confines of the Sports & Expo Center until...get this...January 20! During their extended time away (64 days, but who's counting), the Monarchs will play a challenging road schedule that features four games against ranked opponents.
