KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Macomb Women's Basketball raced out to a 10-0 lead and eventually held a 22-1 advantage before the host Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley Community College got their first field goal to drop in a 71-48 road victory on Saturday (Dec. 16). The Monarchs, winners of three in a row and now 6-3 on the season, have outscored the opposition by a staggering 40.3 points per game over the course of their three-game winning streak.
The Cougars made their first bucket at the 2:44 mark of the first quarter and the Monarchs led 26-8 after 10 minutes of play in the road victory.
Earning a 20+ point lead early, the Monarchs went on to double-up the Cougars at the half by a score of 38-19.
The 19-point halftime advantage was all the Monarchs would need as the Blue & White cruised to the 23-point road win.
Marissa Thomas (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg) tallied a game-high 14 points and added two assists, two steals and a pair of rebounds. Five-time MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week,
Tamia Tounsel (Macomb, Mich./Dakota), was impressive throughout on her way to double-double No. 4 on the season with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Tounsel has won conference weekly honors three times this season and twice last season.
Sydney Garon (Shelby Twp., Mich./Henry Ford II) continued her strong play with 13 points and
Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) checked in with 10 points to round out the leading scorers for the Monarchs.
Danielle Billinger (Detroit, Mich./Riverview Gabriel Richard) and
Hannah Roberts (Roseville, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) hauled in seven rebounds each and
MaKayla Downs (Chesterfield, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) had a hand in swiping a game-high five steals in the win.
The Monarchs will have time off from game action around the holidays and will return to their home hardwood on Dec. 30 with a non-conference tilt against Alma JV at 1 p.m.
