LANSING, Mich. – Macomb Women's Basketball continued its month-long road swing with a visit to Lansing Community College on Saturday (Dec. 2). In an otherwise back-and-forth contest, a tough second quarter for the Monarchs led to a 27-15 halftime deficit and helped the host Stars pick up a 49-37 win in the battle between one-loss teams.
Saturday's result sent the Monarchs to 3-2 on the season and lifted the Stars to 7-1 overall.
After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes of play, an unlucky second quarter was ultimately the difference in the game as the Stars outscored the Monarchs, 15-6, in the frame to take a 27-15 lead at the half.
The Monarchs battled back after the break, outscoring the Stars 13-10 in the third quarter, but the comeback bid fell short as the Stars remained steady for the 12-point victory.
The Monarchs battled tough on the boards and won the rebounding battle, 35-30, despite giving up size to Stars roster with plenty of height. The Stars earned a 13-3 advantage in points off turnovers, including an 8-0 edge in the category in the second quarter alone.
Marissa Thomas (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg) led the Monarchs with 13 points and was joined in double figures scoring by
Enddiea Reese (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) with 10 points. Thomas added six rebounds, two behind Saturday's leader,
Tamia Tounsel (Macomb, Mich./Dakota), who hauled in eight rebounds. Tounsel tallied six points and
Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) followed with five points and five rebounds.
The Monarchs head north for a pair of games against MCCAA North teams next weekend beginning with a Friday (Dec. 8) evening tilt at No. 15 Mid Michigan College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Morey Courts in Mt. Pleasant. On Saturday (Dec. 9), the Monarchs will be in Petoskey for an afternoon battle with the Timberwolves of North Central Michigan College. Tip-off for that game is slated for 3 p.m. on the campus of North Central Michigan College.
