WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Women's Basketball erased an early 14-point deficit but couldn't overcome a strong second half by SC4 as the visiting Skippers won in Warren, 68-56, on Saturday (Feb. 18). The loss drops the Monarchs to 16-7 overall and 6-5 in the MCCAA East. The Skippers moved to 17-9 overall and 8-3 in conference play with the 12-point win.
At 6-5 in conference play, the Monarchs remain in a fourth place tie with OCC after the Raiders lost narrowly at home to Schoolcraft Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs visit OCC Wednesday (Feb. 22) in a matchup with plenty of playoff implications on the line.
Down by as many as 14 early (18-4), the Monarchs methodically made their way back into the contest and eventually tied the game at 30-30 with 45 seconds remaining in the first half. The Monarchs would tack on another free throw and SC4 converted on their final possession to result in a 32-31 Skippers advantage at the break.
The Skippers caught fire in the latter half and outscored the Monarchs 18-14 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the fourth and final quarter for the 68-56 decision.
Rayonna Armstrong (Toledo, OH/Notre Dame Academy) tied her season-high with 18 points to lead the Monarchs and
Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) added 11 points to pace the Monarchs.
Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) and
Tamia Tounsel (Shelby Twp., Mich./Dakota) each pulled down a team-best five rebounds, while Tounsel and
Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) led the team in assists with three each.
Jasmine Ellis (Hazel Park, Mich./Michigan Math & Science) and Tounsel each tallied eight points to round out Saturday's leaders for the Monarchs.
