Women’s Basketball Drops Home Tilt to Hot-Shooting Jets, 79-57

The Monarchs visit OCC Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to close out regular season play

HIGHLIGHTS

WARREN, Mich. –
The visiting No. 18 Jackson College Jets shot over 50% from the field overall and 50% from 3-point land to top the Monarchs on Sophomore Night, 79-57, Tuesday (Feb. 28) in Warren. With the setback, the Monarchs shift to 17-8 overall and 7-6 in the MCCAA East. The 7-6 record in conference play sets up a showdown with fellow 7-6 team, Oakland Community College (OCC), Thursday in Auburn Hills.

The winner of Thursday's regular season finale will earn the fourth seed and travel to the third place team in the MCCAA East on March 7 to begin NJCAA Region XII Tournament action. The loser takes fifth place and will visit the second-seeded team out of the MCCAA East to open the tournament, also on March 7.

As for Tuesday's game, Jackson hit key shots to stave off Monarch runs early and remained hot throughout to pull away for the win. Rayonna Armstrong (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) was the lone Monarch in double figures scoring with 14 points, while Tamia Tounsel (Shelby Twp., Mich./Dakota) grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds. Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) and Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) tallied nine points each and Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) followed with eight points and five rebounds. Hannah Roberts (Roseville, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) finished the night with seven rebounds and six points to round out Tuesday's leaders.

Prior to the game against Jackson, the Monarchs honored the careers of their six sophomores: Ryleigh Sanom, Jasmine Ellis, Rylee Thomas, Valina HudginsRayonna Armstrong and Amy Jackson. Macomb Athletics thanks the sophomores for their contributions and wishes them the best of luck with their future endeavors!
