BY THE NUMBERS: 6
With a two-run shot by
Reese Rinna in Sunday's 11-7 setback, the Monarchs have now hit
six (6) home runs through 14 games played this season.
Ben Dillabough leads the way with two, while
Tom Burt,
Alex Mendes,
Joey Tedesco and Rinna all have one deep ball on the season. Last year, the Monarchs hit seven home runs in 46 games played.
BY THE NUMBERS: 8
While the home opener didn't go the Monarchs way late in the contest,
Joey Tedesco kept the Blue & White in it early as the sophomore left-handed pitcher struck out
eight (8) batters while only surrendering three runs over 5.1 innings pitched. Tedesco led the Monarchs in strikeouts last season with 47 punch outs in 38 innings pitched.
THE WEEK AHEAD
The Monarchs continue to battle despite being bit hard by the injury bug and will have four games ahead this week beginning with a non-conference doubleheader at Cornerstone JV Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Monarchs return to conference play Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. first pitch at The Corner Ballpark against Henry Ford before hosting SC4 for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday afternoon.
RINNA RETURNS STRONG
After suffering an injury during his first at-bat of the season (which was a double), redshirt freshman
Reese Rinna returned with authority last week and is now hitting .417 with a 1.462 OPS and a 1.000 slugging percentage. On Sunday, Rinna hit a two-run home run and doubled, and earlier in the week the outfielder/designated hitter hit a pair of doubles in the Monarchs home opener.
DILLABOUGH'S FOUR-HIT WEEK
While Rinna provided the pop at the plate, sophomore outfielder
Ben Dillabough also enjoyed a stellar week offensively by recording a hit in all three games (four in total). Dillabough, the team's home run leader with two on the season, hit his first double of the campaign in Sunday's 11-7 setback to Mott CC at West Bloomfield High School.
HEY, JACK!
Freshman outfielder
Jack Blomme and sophomore catcher/infielder
Jack Lyndrup each had three hits last week for the Monarchs as Blomme hit .400 with a pair of doubles and Lyndrup hit .333 with a double and a run batted in through three games played.
ON THE ROAD TWICE
The Monarchs begin their week in Grand Rapids with a non-conference twin bill Tuesday against the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone (JV). On Thursday, the Monarchs head to the famed corner of Michigan and Trumbull for a 7:30 p.m. under the lights conference tilt against Henry Ford. The Hawks enter the week with a 4.98 team ERA (third in the MCCAA) and are hitting .269 as a team.
HOME SATURDAY AGAINST SC4
After being on the road Tuesday and Thursday, the Monarchs return to Macomb's South Campus to host the Skippers of St. Clair County Community College Saturday for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The Skippers enter the week with a 6-8 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the MCCAA East. The Skippers are fifth in the MCCAA with a 5.16 team ERA and hit .266 as a team.
ON THE MOUND
While errors allowed for runs to inflate a bit last week, several Monarchs enjoyed stellar outings on the bump, led by
Joey Tedesco's eight punch outs through 5.1 innings and another strong showing by
Brendan Bos. Bos tossed two innings of no-hit ball (no runs) Sunday, while
Gary Glaser III went five innings strong and only gave up three earned.
COMMITMENT TRACKER
While its been a tough go as of late amid a rash of injuries, the total number of Monarchs on the current roster who have committed to a four-year next year is up to five (three NCAA D2, two NAIA).
Terry Dean has committed to the University of South Carolina-Beaufort (NCAA D2),
Tom Burt and
Gavin Nareski both committed to Alderson Broaddus University of West Virginia (NCAA D2), while
Jeremy Pudlik and
Logan Rybarczyk committed to Indiana Tech (NAIA). Last year, the Monarchs sent one to a four-year school (H. Ryan, Concordia).
