Baseball Splits Non-Conference Twin Bill Behind Balanced Game Two Effort

Kyle Ciner ignited the offense with a three-run blast, while a committee made the game two win possible on the mound

HIGHLIGHTS

WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Baseball got back into the win column Monday (April 24) with a non-conference split against Terra State Community College. The Monarchs dropped game one, 9-4, before bouncing back to take game two by a 5-3 final behind balanced play.

The victory in the nightcap marked the Monarchs ninth win of the campaign and was the fourth win in the last five home games played at the friendly confines in Warren.

After going down 5-0 in game one, the Monarchs battled back with a four-run fifth inning that was capped off by a two-RBI single back up the middle by Logan Rybarczyk (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay). Rybarczyk's single cut the Titans lead to 5-4, but the visitors extended their edge to 9-4 with a big seventh inning to secure the victory.

In game two, Kyle Ciner (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) got the Monarchs on the board in a big way when he connected on a monstrous three-run home run that went well over the left field wall. The home run, Ciner's first at the collegiate level, gave the Monarchs a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Jeremy Pudlik (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) helped tack on another run in the fourth inning with a ball hit up the middle that plated Adam Amodei (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and the Monarchs scored their fifth and final run of the nightcap in the sixth inning after a Ciner sacrifice bunt resulted in a Titans throwing error that brought Kaden Kovach (Yale, Mich./Yale) all the way around to score.

The Monarchs' pitching was stellar in game two as a committee of five different hurlers helped the Blue & White earn the split. Owen Lamky (Chesterfield, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) was the game two starter and went on to toss three innings of one-hit ball while striking out five batters. Jake Verellen (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) stepped on to the mound with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and struck out three of the four batters he faced to help minimize any damage done in the frame.

The solid work by Verellen helped the freshman right-hander earn his first win at the collegiate level.

Carlo Corona (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) was next on the mound for one inning of work followed by sophomore captain, Gary Glaser III (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North), who came on in the sixth inning with the Monarchs clinging to a 4-3 lead. Glaser pitched a clean inning as he retired the Titans in order, and after a Monarchs run made it 5-3 in the home half of the sixth, Brendan Bos (Howell, Mich./Howell) shut the door in the seventh inning for his fourth save of the season.

The four saves by Bos is the most by a Monarch pitcher since 2014 when Alek Greiner recorded four through 11 appearances.

The Monarchs return to MCCAA Eastern Conference play at home Thursday (April 27) when the Hawks of Henry Ford College visit Warren for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Thursday's doubleheader will be streamed live on www.MacombMonarchs.com/Watch with live stats also available (link on the baseball schedule page).
