NORTHVILLE, Mich. – Macomb Softball got back in the win column Saturday (April 8) after splitting a road doubleheader with MCCAA Eastern Conference counterpart, Schoolcraft College. The Monarchs topped the host Ocelots in game one by an 8-0 final before dropping a heartbreaker in game two, 2-1.
The split shifts the Monarchs record to 8-11 overall and 2-5 in the MCCAA East.
In game one,
Allison Vogt (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) got the start in the circle and went the distance after putting together an impressive performance. The freshman right-handed pitcher fanned nine Ocelots and only walked one while allowing four hits across seven scoreless innings. The complete game shutout lifts Vogt's record to 5-3 on the season – the five wins is a team-high.
While Vogt was dealing in the circle,
Samantha Scott (Romeo, Mich./Eisenhower) continued to heat up at the plate as the sophomore went a perfect 4-for-4 with a season-high five RBIs in the opener. Scott hit a home run, an estimated 240' two-run shot over the center field wall, for her third long ball in the past 24 hours.
The Monarchs recorded four doubles in the 8-0 opening win as
Brynn Beyer (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North),
Carleigh Bilpo (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II),
Emma Lautenbach (Warren, Mich./Center Line),
Katelyn Thomas (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) and
Elizabeth Townsend (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) all connected on a double each.
Three other Monarchs joined Scott with multi-hit games as Beyer, Townsend and
Danielle Erickson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) all went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
In game two, the Monarchs put a runner on base in every inning and loaded the bases on a few occasions, but couldn't bring the runs across in a narrow 2-1 setback.
Haley Mitchell (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) tied the game with an RBI in the second inning and the nightcap remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the host Ocelots scored with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win.
In all, the Monarchs recorded 10 hits in game two and were led by Bilpo and Townsend with two hits each. With another strong day at the plate, Townsend is now hitting a team leading and MCCAA Eastern Conference best .509 through 18 games played.
Carly Sierzenga (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) pitched well in game two after only allowing two earned over six innings while striking out three batters.
The Monarchs will host a four-day, eight-game homestand beginning Wednesday against Schoolcraft. First pitch for the conference doubleheader is 3 p.m. on Macomb's South Campus.
