WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Volleyball got off to a hot start and never looked back in a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Norse of Bay College Friday (Sept. 8) at the Sports & Expo Center. The Monarchs, now 3-2 on the season, won by set scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23 to send the Norse to 5-6 overall this season.
The Monarchs have a quick turnaround and will host the North Central Michigan College Timberwolves Saturday (Sept. 9) at 1 p.m. inside the Sports & Expo Center. The Timberwolves won the first meeting of the season, a 3-2 decision in Petoskey on Aug. 25.
As for Friday's sweep over Bay, the Monarchs were efficient early and often on their way to a .316 hitting percentage in the opening set and a .300 hitting percentage in set two. In all, the Monarchs recorded 31 kills and had 12 errors on 77 attack attempts for a .247 hitting percentage Friday evening.
Defensively, the Monarchs shook off some rust and rebounded to post 39 digs and four blocks. The Monarchs also tallied eight aces, led by two each from
Mallory Cardinale (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley),
Paige Elliott (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and
Adeline Tresnak (Dryden, Mich./Dryden).
Grace Amoe (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) was stellar throughout on her way to a career-best and team-high eight kills. The freshman middle only committed one attack error on the night for an impressive .636 hitting percentage and added a solo block and a pair of block assists.
Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) followed Amoe with seven kills and Tresnak checked in with five kills to go along with a team-high and career-high 12 digs.
Elliott quarterbacked the offense to the tune of 31 assists and was one of four Monarchs with five or more digs in the sweep. Tresnak's 12 digs led the way, while
Becca Weiss (Dryden, Mich./Dryden) had eight and
Nikole Nikolova (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) followed with seven. Elliott recorded five digs to round out Friday night's leaders.
