Shorthanded Monarchs Overcome Slow Start, Run Past Schoolcraft to Win MCCAA East Opener

The sixth-ranked Monarchs (12-2, 1-0) outscored the Ocelots 59-37 in the second half to earn the win.

LIVONIA, Mich. – Nate Brown (Flint, Mich./Davison) paced four Monarchs in double figures with a Macomb career-best 18 points and Parker Day (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage/GVSU) recorded a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double to help lift No. 6 Monarchs to an 87-72 victory at Schoolcraft on Saturday (Jan. 13). The Monarchs were without the services of leading scorer Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renassiance) and Kyle Millender (Detroit, Mich./DEPSA) but were able to overcome a sluggish start to cruise to a 15-point victory. Maxey—the reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week—and Millender have combined for over 25 points per game this season.

The loss halted the host Ocelots (8-7, 0-1) win streak at six games.

Trailing early in the second half, the Monarchs adjusted and went on a tear that resulted in a 59-37 edge in the latter stanza. Brown was key throughout Saturday's shorthanded win as the sophomore transfer hit timely shots and made big plays to post a team-best 18 points. Day followed Brown in the scoring column with 15 points and added 10 rebounds, while Josh Hines (Macomb, Mich./Dakota/U-Indy) tallied 14 points and corralled four rebounds. Justin James (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) rounded out four in double digits with 12 points and added a game-high-tying five assists.

Brown, Day, Hines and James all shot 50% or better from the field in the win. The strong shooting helped lift Monarchs to 55% shooting overall in Saturday's road victory.

Tate MacKenzie (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) tallied nine points, pulled down 12 rebounds and recorded three blocks, while Tymias Williams (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) tied MacKenzie for the team-lead on the glass with 12 rebounds. Williams added six points and tied James for the team lead with five assists.

Despite being shorthanded, the Monarchs depth continued to be a strong point as the Blue & White outscored Schoolcraft's in bench scoring, 34-8.

The sixth-ranked Monarchs visit No. 14 Henry Ford Wednesday at 7 p.m.
