Parker Day! Despite falling on the road to perennial power No. 5 South Suburban, the Monarchs had a couple bright spots, including the play of sophomore forward
Parker Day. The Grand Valley transfer posted a team-high
26 points and shot 9-of-11 from the charity stripe while grabbing seven rebounds in the hard-fought contest.
BY THE NUMBERS: 6
After going 9-2 over the course of the 2023 portion of their schedule, the Monarchs check in at No.
6 nationally. The Monarchs picked up key wins in the first half of the season, including topping preseason No. 3 Niagara County and No. 19 Kalamazoo Valley. The two losses have came to No. 5 South Suburban and No. 7 Ellsworth.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
The sixth-ranked Monarchs will begin 2024 at nearby SC4 as they take part in the Skippers New Years Classic on Jan. 5 & 6 at the SC4 Fieldhouse in Port Huron. The Monarchs will take on Muskegon Community College on Friday at 4 p.m. before closing out the classic with another battle against No. 19 KVCC on Saturday at 1 p.m.
SPREADING IT AROUND
Juwan Maxey leads six in double figures at 15.7 points per game (PPG).
Tymias Williams is next at 15.2 PPG, while
Nate Brown and
Parker Day follow at 15.0 PPG and 14.2 PPG, respectively.
Josh Hines nets 11.9 PPG and
Kyle Millender averages 10.5 per contest.
Justin James checks in at 9.7 PPG, while
Jotham Nweke (7.9),
Marlon Williams (7.9),
Tate MacKenzie (7.5) and
DaMaryon Fishburn (4.1) round out the scoring.
NATIONAL LEADERBOARD
At the time of this release, the Monarchs rank sixth nationally in scoring at 96.0 PPG, third in assists (23.4) and check in fifth in field goal percentage at 51.5%. On the defensive end, the Monarchs rank third nationally in field goal percentage defense at 35.8%. Additionally, the Monarchs rank fifth nationally in rebounds per game at 48.7.
BROWN'S STRONG DEBUT
Quite the debut! Sophomore guard
Nate Brown made his long-awaited Macomb debut, doing so in a tough road environment at South Suburban on Dec. 30. Brown finished his first game back with 15 points (6-6 FT) and added a team-high four assists.
A LOOK AT: MUSKEGON
The Muskegon CC Jayhawks enter this weekend's Skippers New Years Classic on a two-game skid and with a 4-7 record overall. Through 11 games, the Jayhawks average 69.7 points per game and are led in scoring by three players in double figures: Jadakiss Lewis (15.6 PPG), Ben Clark (12.2 PPG) and Kaden George (10.8 PPG).
A FAMILIAR FOE
The sixth-ranked Monarchs will close out their time in Port Huron over the weekend with a Saturday showdown against No. 19 Kalamazoo Valley CC. The Monarchs won the first meeting of the season, a 92-84 victory in overtime at KVCC after leading by as many as 14 in the second half. The Cougars are led by NCAA D1 transfer Joe Liedel at 21.8 PPG. Jaylin Fox follows at 17.0 PPG and Ashton Atwater dishes out 6.2 APG.
REBOUNDING REMAINS KEY
Fifth nationally in rebounds per game (48.7), the Monarchs will look to bounce back into the win column and will likely do so behind a strong effort on the glass. Through 11 games, the Monarchs are 9-0 when out-rebounding their opponent and 0-2 when out-rebounded by the opposition.
Parker Day leads a balanced cast on the boards at 7.4 RPG.
