PORT HURON, Mich. – Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) drained six 3-pointers to lead six Monarchs in double figures with 20 points as No. 6 Macomb Men's Basketball cruised to a 107-47 victory over Muskegon on day one of the Skippers New Year's Classic in Port Huron. The win lifted the sixth-ranked Monarchs to 10-2 on the season. The Jayhawks fell to 4-8 after the 60-point setback on Friday (Jan. 5).
Dominant from start-to-finish, the Monarchs led 52-19 at the half on their way to the 60-point victory.
The Monarchs shot 60% for the game, including a 47.6% clip from downtown (10-of-21) thanks to a 6-of-9 effort from 3-point territory by Maxey. Defensively, the Monarchs held the Jayhawks to 29.2% shooting overall and 16.7% from 3-point land in the win. The Monarchs also earned decisive advantages in points in the paint (38-14) and bench scoring (51-20).
Maxey hauled in seven rebounds to accompany his game-high 20 point afternoon and
Josh Hines (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) followed with 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting while adding four rebounds and three assists.
Tate MacKenzie (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) grabbed six boards and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field on his way to 14 points, while
Jotham Nweke (Oak Park, Mich./Loyola) added 13 points and six rebounds in the win.
Kyle Millender (Detroit, Mich./DEPSA) checked in with 12 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists and
Justin James (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) rounded out the six Monarchs in double figures with 11 points to go along with a game-high five assists.
The Monarchs return to Port Huron for day two of the Skippers New Year's Classic on Saturday (Jan. 6) to take on No. 19 Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The Monarchs defeated the Cougars in overtime, 92-84, in the first meeting of the season on Dec. 16 in Kalamazoo.
