LIVONIA – Macomb Volleyball picked up its 10
th win of the season on Monday (Oct. 21) with a split at the Madonna Reserves Tri-Match in Livonia, Mich. The Monarchs, playing shorthanded Monday afternoon, started the day with a 3-1 setback to the host Crusaders before bouncing back to defeat the Spring Arbor Reserves by a resounding 3-0 tally.
MATCH ONE: Madonna 3, Macomb 1 (25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 23-25)
The Monarchs won the opening set but couldn't string together the points needed to extend the match past four sets in the 3-1 setback.
Jordan Pflaum (Shelby Twp., Mich./Lutheran High North) and
Kaley Eller (Utica, Mich./Utica) led the way with eight and seven kills, respectively, while
Milley McCutcheon (Roseville, Mich./Lakeview) assisted on 12 of the Monarchs' 28 kills.
Defensively,
Sophia Kulaga (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) paced the action with 14 digs, while Eller added 11 and
Alexis Cunha (Richmond, Mich./Anchor Bay) chipped in with 10.
Katarina Gavric (Canton, Mich./Salem) recorded a career-best five aces, followed by Kulaga with three.
MATCH TWO: Macomb 3, Spring Arbor 0 (25-14, 25-6, 25-20)
The opening-match setback didn't linger as the Monarchs bounced back to defeat the Spring Arbor Reserves in three sets behind a match-high nine kills by
Mariah Anderson (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Enterprise) and a career-best 25 assists and six aces by
Milley McCutcheon.
Anderson's nine kills came on 13 swings with only one error for a team-best .615 hitting percentage (min. 10 attempts).
Blocks were aplenty throughout the day, especially in the winning match against Spring Arbor as Anderson and
Jordan Pflaum accounted for six block assists each. Pflaum and
Alexis Cunha led the digs department with 10 each, while
Sophia Kulaga accounted for nine and
Kara Beeker (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) added seven in the winning effort.
