Shorthanded Monarchs Pick Up 10th Win of Season, Split Non-Conference Tri-Match

The Monarchs rebounded from a 3-1 loss in match one to the Madonna Reserves with a 3-0 sweep over the Spring Arbor Reserves.

LIVONIA – Macomb Volleyball picked up its 10th win of the season on Monday (Oct. 21) with a split at the Madonna Reserves Tri-Match in Livonia, Mich. The Monarchs, playing shorthanded Monday afternoon, started the day with a 3-1 setback to the host Crusaders before bouncing back to defeat the Spring Arbor Reserves by a resounding 3-0 tally.

MATCH ONE: Madonna 3, Macomb 1 (25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 23-25)
The Monarchs won the opening set but couldn't string together the points needed to extend the match past four sets in the 3-1 setback. Jordan Pflaum (Shelby Twp., Mich./Lutheran High North) and Kaley Eller (Utica, Mich./Utica) led the way with eight and seven kills, respectively, while Milley McCutcheon (Roseville, Mich./Lakeview) assisted on 12 of the Monarchs' 28 kills.

Defensively, Sophia Kulaga (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) paced the action with 14 digs, while Eller added 11 and Alexis Cunha (Richmond, Mich./Anchor Bay) chipped in with 10.

Katarina Gavric (Canton, Mich./Salem) recorded a career-best five aces, followed by Kulaga with three.

MATCH TWO: Macomb 3, Spring Arbor 0 (25-14, 25-6, 25-20)
The opening-match setback didn't linger as the Monarchs bounced back to defeat the Spring Arbor Reserves in three sets behind a match-high nine kills by Mariah Anderson (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Enterprise) and a career-best 25 assists and six aces by Milley McCutcheon.

Anderson's nine kills came on 13 swings with only one error for a team-best .615 hitting percentage (min. 10 attempts).

Blocks were aplenty throughout the day, especially in the winning match against Spring Arbor as Anderson and Jordan Pflaum accounted for six block assists each. Pflaum and Alexis Cunha led the digs department with 10 each, while Sophia Kulaga accounted for nine and Kara Beeker (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) added seven in the winning effort.
