Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Back to Danville! Men’s Basketball Captures Historic Great Lakes District Title, Secures Auto Bid to NJCAA DII National Championship

The Monarchs will learn their seed and opponent when the NJCAA releases the bracket during the 2024 NJCAA Division II National Championship Selection Show on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET.

FLINT, Mich. – They're going-going, back-back, to Danville-Danville! Macomb Men's Basketball defeated Kalamazoo Valley Community College by a 97-89 final to capture the Great Lakes District B Championship and improve to 28-3 on the season. The Great Lakes District B title punched the Monarchs ticket to the 2024 NJCAA Division II National Championship and made program history in the process.

With Sunday's (March 10) Great Lakes District B title, the Monarchs won a MCCAA Conference Championship, MCCAA (State) Championship and Region 12 (District) Championship in the same season for the first time in program history. At 28-3, the Monarchs have tied the record for most wins in program history, a record that was set by last year's National Runner-Up team.

The incredible 2023-24 campaign will continue March 18-23 at the Mary Miller Center in Danville, Ill., as the Monarchs are set to compete in their second national tournament in as many seasons.

Find out who the Monarchs will play and what seed they receive by watching the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Selection Show on Tuesday (March 12) at 2 p.m. ET.

As for Sunday's historic title win, the Monarchs defeated the KVCC Cougars for the fourth time this season, going 4-0 against a MCCAA Western Conference Champion team that ends its season at 24-7 overall. The Monarchs swept last year's meeting as well, including a Great Lakes District C Championship victory, to move their record over KVCC to 6-0 since the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.

Despite the recent record in the matchup, the Monarchs received the Cougars best shot and weathered an early storm to take a 42-36 lead into the halftime break. The teams would play to a back-and-forth second half before the returning cast of Justin James (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson), Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), Kyle Millender (Detroit, Mich./DEPSA) and Tymias Williams (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) would secure the victory late with clutch veteran play.

With 1:20 remaining and the Monarchs holding on to a narrow 90-89 lead, Millender would pass the ball down to Williams who then found Maxey for an open 3-pointer. Maxey's massive triple pushed the Monarchs lead out to 93-89 with 1:15 left on the second half clock and James would later come up with the game-sealing steal with under a minute to play as the Blue & White went on to win, 97-89.

Williams, who was named Tournament MVP following the contest, posted a career-high 26 points and added 12 rebounds to pace six Monarchs in double figures. Fellow All-Tournament Team members Maxey and Miller followed with 16 points and 15 points, respectively, while Nate Brown (Flint, Mich./Davison) completed his homecoming weekend with a 13 point effort in the title game. Josh Hines (Macomb, Mich./Dakota/U-Indy) and Jotham Nweke (Oak Park, Mich./Loyola) followed with 10 points each, while Tate MacKenzie (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) checked in with seven points.

Stay tuned for more NJCAA Division II National Championship information following Tuesday's Selection Show.
