MELBOURNE, Fla. – Down 3-0 early and 5-2 entering the seventh and final inning, the Monarchs' bats got hot at the right time to earn a thrilling 6-5 walk-off, comeback win over Muskegon Community College to open Monday's (March 4) action at the Space Coast Games. After a longer-than-advertised wait before game two started, the Monarchs' bats cooled as Calumet St. Joseph JV won the nightcap by a 9-1 final score.
Monday's split sends the Monarchs to 1-3 on the young season ahead of Tuesday's games against John Melvin University (12:15 p.m.) and Siena Heights University JV (2:30 p.m.).
Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh in the opener against Muskegon, the Monarchs refused to lose as
Sydney Urban (Warren, Mich./Regina) led the inning off with a triple to deep right field.
Kaycee Stang (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) doubled one batter later to bring in Urban and later scored on an RBI by
Savanna Clark (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) to get the Monarchs within one at 5-4.
Down to their last out and with
Chloe Cantin (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) on third and a speedy Clark at first,
Katelyn Thomas (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) stepped to the plate and came up clutch by hammering a 2-0 pitch back up the middle to score Cantin and Clark and walk-off Muskegon by a 6-5 final tally.
Allison Vogt (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) got the win in game one to pull her record even on the season at 1-1.
In game two, the Monarch bats could only bring one run across the score as
Haley Mitchell (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) drove in the lone run as part of a 2-for-3 effort, while
Ally Prasnjak (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) went 1-for-2 and scored on a Mitchell RBI single.
