Monarchs Battle Back, Drop Hard-Fought Great Lakes District A Quarterfinal at Schoolcraft

Down big early, the Monarchs refused to quit and cut a 28 point deficit down to single digits in the 80-67 decision.

LIVONIA, Mich. – The 2023-24 campaign for Macomb Women's Basketball came to end in the Great Lakes District A Quarterfinals on Tuesday (March 5) with an 80-67 playoff loss to the host Ocelots of Schoolcraft College. The decision ended the Monarchs season at 17-10 overall. Schoolcraft advanced to the District A Semifinals on Thursday against top-seeded Mid Michigan with the win.

The host Ocelots jumped out to a commanding first quarter lead and were in control for the rest of the first half as they took a 49-22 lead into the halftime break. Putting their heart on display, the Monarchs came out of the locker room a determined group and went on to outscore the Ocelots by a 24-10 margin to close the gap entering the fourth quarter.

Refusing to back down, the Monarchs were able to get the Ocelot lead down to single digits, but the hosts made a fourth quarter run from there to close out the 13-point decision.

Marissa Thomas (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg) was a force in her final game in a Monarch uniform and poured in a game-high 22 points on 50% shooting while adding seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Sydney Garon (Shelby Twp., Mich./Henry Ford II) connected on five 3-pointers to post 15 points, while the trio of MaKayla Downs (Chesterfield, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North), Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) and Tamia Tounsel (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) all tallied 10 points each to round out the five Monarchs in double figures scoring.

Tounsel hauled in nine rebounds to accompany her 10-point effort while battling unfortunate foul trouble throughout.
