BY THE NUMBERS: 13
History has been made! Three days after Macomb Softball had a no-hitter, Macomb Baseball got in on the fun as the foursome of
Frank Asta,
Owen Lamky,
Ethan Miller and
Brandon Rice teamed up to toss a combined no-hitter against Indiana Tech. The outstanding effort resulted in the
13th no-hitter in program history (fourth combined).
BY THE NUMBERS: 11
Well, since we messed up and combined their stats from game one and two, it's only fitting that we highlight the day had by the freshman duo of
Ryan McKay and
Dane Richards at Indiana Tech. The pair combined for
11 RBIs in the road sweep as Richards went 4-for-6 with five RBIs and a double while McKay batted 3-for-7 with three doubles and six RBIs.
THE ADJUSTED WEEK AHEAD
Rain (and lots of it) has forced a schedule change for the Schoolcraft series as Thursday's home doubleheader has been shifted to a 1 p.m. start on Sunday in Warren due to significant rainfall expected Thursday into Friday. The Monarchs will travel to The Corner Ballpark in Detroit to battle the Ocelots in a conference twin bill on Saturday. First pitch in Detroit is set for 1 p.m.
KRZCIOK LEADS THE BATS
Brady Krzciok hit three more home runs since our last edition of game notes to push his total to a MCCAA-best seven on the season. Krzciok is slashing .458/.566/.915 with a 1.481 OPS and a team-high 24 RBIs while three others follow above a .400 average (min. 10 at-bats):
Dane Richards (.429),
Ty Stepek (.429) and
Riley Ames (.407).
Dylan Pawenski and
Reese Rinna trail Krzciok in RBIs with 14 each.
A PAIR OF PITCHING LEADERS
Two Monarchs appear in the top five in the MCCAA in ERA as sophomore right-handed pitcher
Oliver Barkal checks in third in the association with a 2.95 ERA. Freshman righty
Ryan Sieler, whose WHIP is a MCCAA-best 1.02 on the season, sits in fifth across the entire association (MCCAA East, West and North) with a 3.20 ERA.
THE COMEBACK KID
Redshirt sophomore
Ethan Miller impressed once again in his latest comeback outing from last year's Tommy John surgery. Miller built on a solid initial showing earlier in the season with a lights-out performance in the game two no-hitter at Indiana Tech as he struck out four across two perfect innings to lift his punch out total to seven in 3.2 IP.
PAINTING THE PLAYOFF PICTURE
The top two teams from the MCCAA East, West and North Conferences, along with the top two teams out of the OCCAC, qualify for the NJCAA Region 12 Tournament. The first weekend is hosted at the site of the higher seeds (best 2 out of 3), while the final four advance to Jackson for a double-elimination tournament to determine who punches their ticket to the NJCAA DII World Series.
A LOOK AT: SCHOOLCRAFT
After narrowly defeating the Schoolcraft College Ocelots in the nine-inning contest, 5-4, the Monarchs will begin the four-game, seven-inning series with the Ocelots on Saturday at The Corner Ballpark looking for their first series win in conference play this season. Bryan Tuttle leads the power department for a balanced Ocelots squad with 11 doubles, a triple and one home run while Riley Niggemeyer's 1.69 ERA through 21.1 IP paces the staff.
AROUND THE MCCAA EAST
Parity is the current theme in the MCCAA Eastern Conference early in the league slate as Henry Ford and Jackson sit at 6-3 and Macomb checks in a half-game back at 5-3 (due to their suspended game with SC4 where they lead 3-0 in the sixth). Mott is next at 5-4 while Schoolcraft follows closely at 4-5 and SC4 is 0-8 entering this weekend's slate.
