WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Baseball erupted for 25 runs on 26 hits Saturday (April 20) on their way to sweeping the visiting Bears of Mott Community College. The Monarchs ran away with game one by a 15-3 final in five innings before taking game two by a 10-6 tally.
The pair of wins lifted the Monarchs to 10-4 in the MCCAA East and 16-12 overall. With Saturday's sweep, the Monarchs moved their record this season against Mott to a perfect 3-0, clinching the series ahead of Sunday's doubleheader at Mott. Sunday's action gets underway at 1 p.m. at Ernie Myers Field at Kearsley Park. A familiar voice will be on the call as Tom Cavanaugh will bring you the play-by-play action on Mott's YouTube Channel.
GAME ONE: Macomb 15, Mott 3 (5 Inn.)
The Bears went in front 2-0 after a half inning, but the Monarchs had the answer and then some, tallying 15 unanswered runs on their way to a 15-3 victory.
Ryan Sieler got the game one nod on the mound and pitched all five innings to earn his second win of the season.
On what was the start of a career day,
Ty Stepek went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs while
Ryan McKay connected on his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast over the left field wall, as part of a 2-for-3 opener with three runs scored.
Alex Mendes and
Reese Rinna both drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-2 at the plate and reigning MCCAA East Player of the Week
Dane Richards recorded two RBIs.
GAME TWO: Macomb 10, Mott 6
The Bears went ahead in the first inning once again, this time taking a 3-0 lead after a half-inning of play, but a
Brady Krzciok solo home run sliced into the lead before
Ty Stepek helped the Monarchs regain the lead for good on an emphatic three-run blast that nearly cleared Martin Road in the third inning.
Stepek's three-run shot ignited nine unanswered runs for the Monarchs as the Blue & White went on to earn the 10-6 game two win.
Stepek was 2-for-4 with the 3-run home run, but game two was controlled by the left-handed bat of [Brady] Krzciok as the future CMU Chippewa went 3-for-3 with a home run and two doubles to go along with three RBIs and four runs scored.
Dylan Pawenski and
Derek Ruiz went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs each with Pawenski recording one of the team's four doubles in game two.
Ryan McKay maintained his torrid pace of late with two doubles (2-4, 2 2B, 2 R).
Oliver Barkal got the start and fanned three across three innings of work before
Brandon Rice took the mound to strike out four in 2.2 IP to earn the win, his second of the season.
Ethan Miller came on for the final four outs and struck out two while only allowing one hit.
