JACKSON, Mich. – Macomb Baseball led by as many as six runs and went on to earn an 8-7 victory in Saturday's (April 6) opener, but it was the host Jackson College Jets who would take the series finale by an 8-3 final after tallying a six-run fifth inning as the team's settled for a split. The Saturday split shifts the Monarchs record to 9-11 overall and 5-3 in the MCCAA Eastern Conference. The 5-3 league record currently has the Monarchs sitting in second place, a half game ahead of Mott Community College and a half game back of Jackson.
Ryan McKay (Macomb, Mich./Chippewa Valley) paced the Monarchs in the game one win with a double and a triple as part of a 2-for-4 effort that included an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Ty Stepek (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Northern/GVSU) joined McKay with two hits and a run driven in, while
Sebastian Jaimes (Trenton, Mich./Detroit Western International) and
Derek Ruiz (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron Northern/Madonna) tied for the team-high in RBIs with two each.
Hector Jaimes (Trenton, Mich./Detroit Western International/Wayne State) got the start in game one and held the Jets to two runs on two hits before giving way to
Dominic Miller (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) who went on to record his second win of the season after working one and two-thirds innings pitched.
Jack Saputo (Windsor, Ontario/St. Anne's Catholic) earned his third save of the season after coming on to get the final four outs in a one-run affair. Saputo fanned two and held the Jets to one hit for the well-earned save.
Luke Babcock (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North/Madonna) led the Monarchs in the game two setback by going 2-for-2 with a triple, while
Brady Krzciok (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston/Madonna) hit his seventh home run of the season.
The Monarchs will head to Fort Wayne, Ind., Tuesday (April 9) for a doubleheader at Indiana Tech JV beginning at 3 p.m. The non-conference twin bill replaces the Concordia-Ann Arbor JV doubleheader that was originally on the schedule for Tuesday afternoon.
