MARYSVILLE, Mich. – For the seventh time in program history and first time since 2015, Macomb Softball is heading to the NJCAA Division II World Series! With a 5-4 victory over Hocking College on Saturday (May 11) to claim the 2024 Great Lakes District A Championship, the Monarchs moved to 31-13 on the season and punched their ticket to Spartanburg, SC, May 20-25 to compete in the World Series.
This is the ninth 30-win season in Macomb Softball history.
For the second time in as many days, the Monarchs struck first against the Hawks, this time doing so via the long ball as
Brynn Beyer (Chesterfield, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) got the scoring started with a two-run shot over the center field wall to make it 2-0 in the opening inning. The Monarch bats weren't done in the opening frame as
Carleigh Bilpo (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) followed Beyer's blast with a no-doubter to the woods beyond the wall in right center to give Macomb a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
Unlike yesterday's winner's bracket final matchup that ended 8-0 in favor of Macomb, the Hawks would have an answer and came back to tie the game with a three-run third inning behind a two-run double and an RBI single.
The Monarchs had an answer of their own in the form of
Ally Prasnjak (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) as the sophomore shortstop stepped to the plate in the fifth inning and delivered with a two-RBI double to left field to give the Monarchs the lead for good at 5-3. Prasnjak's double plated
Haley Mitchell (Memphis, Mich./Memphis) and
Zoe Hunt (Warren, Mich./Regina) who both singled earlier in the inning to set the table for Prasnjak's game-winning drive to left.
The Hawks would bring a run across in the sixth, but the pitching of
Allison Vogt (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) and the Monarch defense did the rest to secure a 5-4 victory and earn the program's first trip to the NJCAA Division II World Series in nearly a decade.
Vogt, who earned Great Lakes District A Tournament MVP honors following the title tilt, tossed a complete game to earn her 15
th win of the season (15-5). The win was Vogt's 12
th in a row.
