LIVONIA, Mich. – What a battle! The Macomb Volleyball team earned a huge five-set victory on the road against Schoolcraft College on Monday (Oct. 20), taking a huge step toward clinching the program's latest postseason berth. With the win, the Monarchs improved to 13-10 overall and more importantly shifted to 5-4 in MCCAA East play with three matches remaining in the league slate. At 5-4 in the MCCAA East, the Monarchs are solidly ahead of Oakland Community College (4-6) for the fourth and final playoff sport awarded to the conference. The Monarchs also hold the tiebreaker over Oakland thanks to their four-set win on Oct. 8.
The victory also brought the Monarchs to within a match of Schoolcraft in the standings who ended the night at 6-3 in league play.
After dropping the first set 25-16, the Monarchs regrouped to win sets two and three by scores of 25-17 and 25-20, respectively. A back-and-forth extended battle in the fourth set went to Schoolcraft, 27-25, before the Monarchs scored a 15-13 victory in the decisive fifth set to take the match.
Jordan Pflaum had a career night offensively, registering a collegiate-best 22 kills while adding four aces to help propel the Monarchs to victory. Kaley Eller slammed down 10 kills and Kara Beeker followed with eight of her own to pace the attack. Korin Hutton tallied 45 assists and four aces to post her latest standout match for the Monarchs.
Defensively, the Monarchs had four players reach double-digit dig totals, led by Sophia Kulaga with 20. Brooke Baker and Alexis Cunha posted 16 digs each, while Hutton recorded 12. Pflaum added to her career night with four block assists and was followed by Caryss Terry with three.
The Monarchs will look to push their winning streak to four matches on Wednesday (Oct. 22) with a road match at Jackson College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
