WARREN, Mich. – The No. 4 Macomb Men's Basketball team (0-1) is back in action this week, traveling to Edison State Community College on Wednesday (Nov. 12) for a Region XII battle. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Piqua, Ohio.
SCOUTING EDISON STATE: The Chargers are an impressive 2-1 on the young season and are in the middle of one of the toughest non-conference slates in NJCAA Division II. Through three games, Edison State's most impressive result may have come in a loss as the Chargers battled back-and-forth with the team that lost last year's national championship by one point, and the current No. 2 team in the country, Parkland Community College. The Chargers fell in the home contest narrowly, 94-86.
The Chargers most recently took on MCCAA Eastern Conference member Wayne County Community College and earned a 84-73 road victory in Detroit over the weekend. They also defeated Kellogg Community College in their season opener, 100-72.
Players to watch include sophomores Darian Leslie (26.0 PPG) and Malcolm Curry (23.7 PPG). Against Parkland, Leslie netted 36 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Curry posted 28 points and eight rebounds in the win over Wayne County.
A LOOK AT MACOMB: The Monarchs are looking to bounce back following their 74-72 season-opening loss at NJCAA DI No. 4 Vincennes University on Nov. 4.
Caron Williams posted 21 points and three rebounds, while
Lajuan Holloway tallied 16 points, all coming in the second half, to go along with six boards.
Malachi Irving recorded 13 points and four rebounds, while
Donald Wilburn rounded out the leaders in the hard-fought opener with 10 points and four rebounds.
As a team, the Monarchs shot 24-of-54 from the field, 4-of-12 from three-point land and 20-of-26 at the free throw line. Macomb out-rebounded the host Trailblazers 37-35, in a game that got away late.
LAST MEETING: Macomb won last year's meeting with Edison State in Warren, 104-67, behind 20-point performances out of former Monarch standouts
Jotham Nweke (23) and
Josh Hines (21). Another former standout,
DaMaryon Fishburn tallied 14 while the top returning scorer from last year's game, [Caron] Williams, also netted 14.
Fishburn (Cornell) and Hines (Wisconsin-Green Bay) both went to the NCAA Division I level following their sophomore season at Macomb. Nweke joined teammate
Jalen Jenkins at nearby NCAA Division II Wayne State, while
Marlon Williams went to NCAA Division II Illinois-Springfield.
