GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Macomb Volleyball team saw its season come to an end Friday (Nov. 7) at the Great Lakes District B Tournament. The Monarchs defeated Cuyahoga Community College, 3-0, in an elimination match to begin the day before falling, 3-0, to MCCAA East counterpart Mott Community College in the afternoon tilt on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College.
Despite the loss, Macomb (17-13) finished with their best record since the 2021 season and reached the Great Lakes District Tournament for the third consecutive year. The Monarchs also finished the season with the most wins in the Lauren "Doogie" Rishell coaching era.
MATCH ONE: Macomb 3, Cuyahoga 0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-16):
The Monarchs opened the day cruising to a 25-14 set one victory over the Triceratops. Set two started differently as the Monarchs trailed 13-6 before rallying to win the frame, 25-22. After taking all momentum with the comeback win in the second set, the Monarchs cruised to a 25-16 set three victory to emerge victorious and stave off elimination.
Jordan Pflaum paced the offense with 12 kills, while Kaley Eller added 11. Korin Hutton registered 30 assists and three aces.
Defensively, the Monarchs were led by Alexis Cunha and Sophia Kulaga with 12 digs each.
MATCH TWO: Mott 3, Macomb 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19):
In the second match of the day, the Monarchs were eliminated from district play by MCCAA East counterpart, Mott. The Bears held off the Monarchs, 25-22, in the opening set, and went on two win next two with identical scores of 25-19 to take the match.
Pflaum wrapped up her impressive career in a Monarch uniform with 16 kills and 10 digs for another double-double. Hutton concluded an outstanding freshman campaign with 28 assists. Alexis Cunha tallied 16 digs, while Brooke Baker added eight.
