SARNIA, Ontario, Canada – Back in the win column! Macomb Women's Basketball made the short international trip to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, on Wednesday (Dec. 17) and ended a three-game skid with a 78-62 victory over the host Lions of Lambton College.
The win lifted the Monarchs to 6-4 on the season ahead of Saturday's 1 p.m. road tilt at NJCAA Region 12 counterpart, Hocking College.
After the team's traded baskets for most of the first quarter, the Monarchs were able to end the opening frame strong and take a 22-19 lead through 10 minutes of play. The strong finish to the first quarter gave the Monarchs a lead they never relinquished the rest of the way as the team outscored the Lions, 22-14, in the second quarter to take a 44-33 advantage into the halftime locker room.
The Lions started the third quarter on a quick 7-0 burst to get within four at 44-40, but the Monarchs responded with an 18-5 run of their own for the remainder of the frame to pull away for good in the 16-poiint victory.
The Monarchs led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter on a night where they shot 47% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point land.
MyKenzi Harris paced the Monarch attack with a career-high 23 points on a career-best seven 3-pointers. The freshman guard buried 7-of-10 triple attempts on an 8-of-12 performance overall.
Asiyah Jihad returned to the lineup with 18 points and eight rebounds and
Janiya McWilliams nearly had a triple-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.
A'Liyah Forris rounded out Wednesday's leaders with 15 points, six steals and three assists.
