HARRIMAN, Tenn. – Bouncing back from a tough opener that resulted in a 14-1 loss, the Monarchs went toe-to-toe with the NJCAA Division I Roane State Raiders in a narrow 1-0 setback to close out Tuesday's doubleheader. The Monarchs out-hit the Raiders, 2-1, in game two but couldn't bring a runner across in the one-run affair.
The Monarchs fall to 2-6 in the midst of a challenging spring trip slate against top junior college competition.
Jacob Frederick provided only juice for the Monarchs in the opener, a fourth inning solo shot over the left field wall. The home run came in Frederick's first official at-bat at the collegiate level.
On the mound, sophomore left-handed pitcher
Alex Czapski took the ball for the first time as a Monarch and went on to strike out two in one inning of work.
Game two saw the Monarchs compete in a defensive-minded battle as freshman right-handed pitcher
Matt Dickinson worked five innings of one-hit ball while fanning four in an impressive showing.
Joseph Lulgjuraj came on in the sixth and posted a scoreless inning to keep the Monarch bats well within striking distance, but a
Luke Babcock double and Frederick single were the only hits the Monarchs accounted for in Tuesday's hard-fought latter contest.
