WARREN – Highlighted by an incredible 23-run sixth inning, Macomb Baseball cruised to an impressive 30-6 win in Monday's (April 14) opener before taking game two by a 9-5 margin to sweep the day against Cornerstone University JV. The pair of wins lifts the Monarchs to 19-13 overall ahead of this week's pivotal four-game set against Schoolcraft College.
GAME ONE: Macomb 30, Cornerstone 6 (6 inn.)
Nicholas Sandiha Jr. went 5-for-6 with a double to pace a 24-hit effort for the Monarchs, while
Vincent Cowdrey and
Dane Richards drove in five runs each to account for 10 of the team's 27 RBIs in a 30-6 game one win.
Cowdrey and
Matt Hanneman had a pair of triples each and were joined in the three-bagger parade by Richards,
Nathan Fidelino and
Peyton Rich who each had one. Fidelino and Rich also doubled in the opener, as did Sandiha and
Dominic Cavacini.
The Monarchs led 7-2 entering the sixth inning before the team erupted for an improbable 23-run frame.
While Sandiha's five-hit opener led the hit department, three Monarchs enjoyed a three-hit game (Cavacini,
Buster Debol and
Ryan McKay) and four recorded two hits (Cowdrey, Fidelino, Hanneman and Rich).
Alex Czapski got the start and earned his first collegiate win after going five innings and punching out five batters.
GAME TWO: Macomb 9, Cornerstone 5
Four Monarchs recorded a multi-hit game in the 9-5 victory, led by
Luke Babcock and
Matt Hanneman who hit a triple and double, respectively, while notching two-hit games.
Riley Ames and
Ryan McKay went 2-for-3 with an RBI each while Ames stole a team-best three bases.
Dominic Cavacini continued his strong play to post a team-leading 2-RBI game while
Aidan Miller went 1-for-1 to follow up an opener where he went 0-0 after drawing four walks.
Bryson Roberts picked up his first collegiate win on the mound and
Matt Dickinson shut the opposition down late with two clean innings of work that included a pair of strikeouts.
UP NEXT: Back to 'The Corner'
The Monarchs will head back to The Corner Ballpark on Thursday (April 17) to begin their four-game set against Schoolcraft College. First pitch for the MCCAA Eastern Conference doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. The series will wrap up at Macomb on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
