WARREN – On a day that featured just about everything imaginable on a softball field, Macomb Softball came away with a Sophomore Day split with the visiting Schoolcraft College Ocelots after winning game one, 4-1, and dropping a wet and wild game two, 10-8.
The split sends the Monarchs to 10-12 in MCCAA East play (13-19 overall) with eight league games remaining on the schedule over the next eight days.
Following game two, the Monarchs honored the careers of their four sophomores:
Grace Dzikowski,
Zoe Hunt,
Sydney Urban and
Angelina Viviano.
GAME ONE: Macomb 4, Schoolcraft 1
Grace Dzikowski was in cruise control throughout the opener, striking out seven across a complete seven innings of work while only allowing one run in the 4-1 victory.
Alexa Garofalo had a hit and a RBI in the first inning before exiting early and
Savanna Smith drove home what would stand as the game-winning run on an RBI double to right field in the second inning.
Riley McLaughlin put the Monarchs in front by a 3-0 tally with an RBI single back up the middle in the third and
Sydney Urban made it 4-0 with an RBI single to left later in the frame.
McLaughlin paced the offensive attack with a 2-for-2 performance that included two runs scored, a run driven in and a walk. Five other Monarchs recorded a hit in the 4-1 win.
GAME TWO: Schoolcraft 10, Macomb 8
Up 6-1, the Monarchs couldn't hold on as Schoolcraft plated six in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead and later tallied three in the seventh for a 10-7 advantage. The Monarchs attempted to make a comeback of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but the game-tying run was left stranded on second in the hard-fought, back-and-forth battle.
Rain moved in midway through game two and made an impact on play late as both team's pitchers struggled to find a groove in the wet weather.
Paige Muehlbrandt went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while
Raegan Hemelberg went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, and
Aubrey Rich went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Riley McLaughlin drove two runs home on a 1-for-2 effort and three walks.
