UTICA – Macomb Baseball won 30 games in a season for the first time in 10 years and the 11
th time in program history after sweeping Owens Community College on Tuesday (April 29) to improve to 30-14 overall. The Monarchs won game one, 13-7, before taking game two by an 8-3 final tally.
With the non-conference sweep behind them, the Monarchs turn their undivided attention to their fifth and final conference series of the regular season against Jackson later this week. The Monarchs are in a heated race for the NJCAA Region XII postseason (top two teams from the conference qualify for postseason play) as they enter the final four-game set in a first-place tie with Henry Ford and a one-game lead over third-place Mott.
The Monarchs visit Jackson to play two on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. The series and regular season concludes Saturday with a home Sophomore Day twin bill against Jackson. First pitch for Sophomore Day is slated for 1 p.m. with the sophomore ceremony taking place following game two.
GAME ONE: Macomb 13, Owens 7
Vincent Cowdrey launched his MCCAA and Region XII best 14
th home run of the season, a 3-run blast, in the game one win and
Riley Ames had a 3-run shot of his own, his second of the campaign, to pace the Monarchs to the 13-7 victory. Ames and Cowdrey also doubled in a highly productive opener as Cowdrey went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Ames went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Luke Babcock and
Nicholas Sandiha Jr. followed with two-hit openers while
Matt Hanneman and
Aidan Miller drove in run each. Sandiha joined Ames and Cowdrey in the two-bagger category with a double of his own in game one.
Connor Hayden came on in relief to earn the win—his fourth of the season—after punching out three in nearly three innings of work, while reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Pitcher of the Week,
Johnathan Meyette, also struck out three.
Merrik Ball came on to get the final out and did so via strikeout to seal the 13-7 victory.
GAME TWO: Macomb 8, Owens 3
Nathan Fidelino drove in four runs on a 2-for-3 performance that included a 2-RBI double and the pitchers did the rest by teaming up for 13 strikeouts in the 8-3 victory.
Bryson Roberts got the start and went three innings while striking out five and only surrendering one hit and
Brendan Przybycki came on for two strong innings of work to earn the win. Przybycki struck out three and didn't allow a run in two innings on the hill before giving way to
Derick Garcia who retired all six batters he faced with five coming via strikeout.
