Angok’s 27, Clutch Triples by Williams Propel Men’s Basketball to 76-69 Home Win Over SC4

Joey Angok posted his first career double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds and Caron Williams knocked down a pair of late triples to lift the Monarchs to victory.

DETROIT, Mich. – Joey Angok registered his first career double-double and Caron Williams provided the theatrics late as Macomb Men's Basketball defeated St. Clair County Community College, 76-69, at Wayne State's Matthaei Center on Wednesday (Jan. 21).

Angok finished with career-highs in points (27) and rebounds (10). The freshman from Grand Rapids also had three blocks in 37 minutes of action and shot 8-of-14 from the field, 2-of-4 from 3-point land and 9-of-11 at the charity stripe.

The score was only tied once and the lead changed just three times, but the MCCAA Eastern Conference battle came down to the final minute with the Monarchs prevailing and improving to 10-9 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Skippers fell to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action with the seven-point setback.

The first half was largely controlled by the Monarchs as the Skippers held a three-point edge early and later tied the game, 35-35, with 1:49 remaining in the opening stanza. The Monarchs scored five of the final eight points of the first half to take a narrow 40-38 edge into the halftime locker room. Angok had 13 of his 27 points in the first period and Williams posted 12 points in the opening frame.

The Monarchs began the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 50-40 lead, but the Skippers responded and were able to regain the lead twice. Both leads were short-lived, including a late 69-68 edge as Williams buried his first of two heroic 3-pointers in the final two minutes to give the Monarchs a 71-69 lead with 1:37 remaining. After a stop on the defensive end, Williams connected from again, this time with :31 remaining to secure the victory.

Williams, the reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, finished with 18 points, four boards and two assists. Keithan Gilmore posted an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double and Jaylon Jackson tallied eight points and three rebounds.

Donald Wilburn stuffed the stat sheet with five points and five boards, while Tabari Howard had another solid all-around game with four points, six rebounds, and four assists.

The Monarchs worked their way to a decisive advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Skippers, 51-33. The Monarchs shot 25-of-61 from the field, 10-of-22 from deep and 16-of-22 from the charity stripe to help secure the hard-fought win.

The Monarchs wrap up a three-game homestand at Wayne State's Matthaei Center on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 3 p.m. against Oakland Community College.
