Men's Basketball Cruises Past Jets, Shifts Back Into First Place Tie

Monarchs wrap up first half of conference play with home victory.

DETROIT, Mich. – Macomb Men's Basketball cruised to an 87-69 victory over Jackson College on Saturday (Jan. 31) inside Wayne State University's Matthaei Center in Detroit. 

With the victory, the Monarchs closed out the first half of MCCAA Eastern Conference play with a 5-2 league mark record (12-10 overall) while the Jets fell to 0-7 in league action (2-20 overall). The 5-2 record in the MCCAA East moves the Monarchs into a four-way tie for first place with seven games remaining in conference play.


The Monarchs jumped on the Jets early as they raced out to an 11-3 lead. The Jets got within two possessions a few minutes later, but that was as close as the contest would get as the Monarchs ballooned the lead to 36 points at the halftime break, 60-24.

Caron Williams had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the opening 20 minutes, while Joey Angok netted all 16 of his points in the opening stanza.

The Jets closed out the game strong, getting the deficit under 20 in the waning minutes as the Monarchs posted the 87-69 victory.

Williams and Angok finished with 16 points each while Donald Wilburn tallied 10 points and five assists. Malachi Irving posted 11 points and six rebounds. 

Justin Gloster chipped in eight points while Simon Stockwell and Dante Wimberly had seven each. Wimberly also had a team-high seven assists. Tabari Howard stuffed the stat sheet in his return to the lineup with eight points and nine rebounds. 

The Monarchs dominated the glass, outrebounding the Jets, 43-17. As a team, the Monarchs shot 37-of-74 from the field, 6-of-19 from deep, and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe while registering 56 points in the paint. 

The Monarchs open the second half of MCCAA Eastern Conference play Wednesday (Feb. 4) against No. 17 Schoolcraft College. Tip-off from the Matthaei Center is set for 7:30 p.m. in Detroit.
