Monarchs Can't Maintain Early Momentum, Fall to Ocelots in Four

Despite the loss, Macomb still in the hunt for a playoff berth.

LIVONIA, Mich. – Macomb Volleyball went on the road Wednesday (Oct. 21) night and dropped a 3-1 decision to host Schoolcraft College. The loss sees Macomb's record fall to 9-13 overall and 5-5 in MCCAA Eastern Conference action while the Ocelots improve to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in league play. With Wednesday's win over the Monarchs, the Ocelots hold the tiebreaker should the two teams end the regular season with the same league record.

The Monarchs came out of the gates firing in the opening set as they earned a dominant 25-13 win. The host Ocelots answered in reverse fashion, cruising to set wins of 25-19 and 25-13 in sets two and three, respectively, before ultimately winning in four sets by a narrow 25-22 margin.

Ava Hunt and Madison Martin led the offense with eight kills each. Hunt added three aces while Delaney Heflin recorded a career-high four aces. Korin Hutton notched 26 assists to add to her impressive career total as the Monarchs starting setter over the past two seasons.

Heflin and Brooke Baker tallied 12 digs each to anchor the back end of the defense, while Bethany Dean took care of the action at the net with three solo blocks and a pair of block assists for a career-best night.

Macomb has the luxury of being at home for the final two matches of the regular season with the chance to secure for a playoff berth as one of the top four seeds out of the MCCAA East. The Monarchs host Oakland Community College Monday (Oct. 26) night at 7 p.m. from The Den in Warren. Monday's all-important conference tilt will also be Sophomore Night as the Monarchs celebrate the careers of two-year players Brooke Baker, Jessica Banar and Korin Hutton.
