WARREN, Mich. – With the playoff picture taking shape, the Macomb Men's Basketball team will wrap up the regular season Tuesday (Feb. 24) at Jackson College. Tip-off between the Jets and Monarchs is set for 7:30 p.m.
Macomb is 16-12 overall and 9-4 in MCCAA Eastern Conference action.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: The log jam at the top of the MCCAA East table has entered the final night of the regular season. Henry Ford College is 10-3 in league play while Macomb, Schoolcraft College and Oakland Community College all sport 9-4 records.
With the Hawks in the driver's seat for the top seed out of the MCCAA East, the Monarchs are in position to take home to the MCCAA East's No. 2 seed with a win at Jackson due to owning the tiebreakers over any of their other top MCCAA counterparts. At night's end on Tuesday, the Monarchs will know which Great Lakes District Championship they will compete in and are likely to host a first-round playoff game at the Matthaei Center in Detroit on March 3.
A LOOK AT JACKSON: The Jets enter their season finale 2-26 overall and 0-13 in MCCAA East action. Jackson has lost 19 straight games and most recently suffered a 103-72 loss at Schoolcraft last Saturday.
Maurice Causey leads the offense with 16.3 points per game while Logan Blackledge has posted 12.3 points per night. Demarion Smith is averaging 11.4 points per contest and Terence Burton hauls in a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game. Talen Hutchinson ranks ninth in the MCCAA with 4.5 assists per game.
Jackson as a team is averaging 72.9 points per contest under head coach Chris Johnston.
A LOOK AT MACOMB: The Monarchs bounced back following last Wednesday's 74-73 loss at No. 21 OCC with a 73-65 victory over Wayne County Community College District Saturday on the campus of Wayne State University.
Macomb honored its sophomore class prior to the game consisting of
Lajuan Holloway,
Tabari Howard,
Malachi Irving,
Jaylon Jackson,
Donald Wilburn and
Caron Williams.
Joey Angok and
Dante Wimberly scored 16 points each to lead the offense in the Wayne County win. Angok scored 14 of his 16 in the second half while Wimberly netted a new career-high along with four assists and two rebounds. The Monarchs outrebounded the Wildcats, 41-24, and shot 47.5% from the field.
Williams continues to pace the Monarch offense with 13.9 points per contest. Angok is averaging 11.4 points per game while Irving isn't far behind with 11.3 per game. Wilburn is averaging 10.8 points per night for head coach
Christopher Burns while Howard has pulled down a team-best 6.7 rebounds per contest and is dishing out 3.6 assists per game.
Macomb is averaging 74.6 points and 41.5 rebounds as a team as the regular season winds down.
EARLIER THIS SEASON: The Monarchs cruised to an 87-69 victory over the Jets on Jan. 31 at the Matthaei Center in Detroit. Williams led the Monarchs with 16 points.
The Monarchs have won 13 straight over the Jets in the all-time series.
