Men's Basketball Cruises Past Jets, Secures East No. 2 Seed

The Monarchs will host SC4 in a Great Lakes District B Quarterfinal matchup on March 3 at 7 p.m.

JACKSON, Mich. – The Macomb Men's Basketball team wrapped the regular season with a 109-78 road victory over Jackson College on Tuesday (Feb. 24). 

With the win, the Monarchs close out the regular season 17-12 overall and 10-4 in MCCAA Eastern conference play. The 10-4 finish in the MCCAA East resulted in the Monarchs securing the No. 2 seed out of the conference and the right to host St. Clair County Community College in the Great Lakes District B quarterfinals on March 3 at 7 p.m. Great Lakes District B Championship Website

As for Tuesday's tilt, the Monarchs let an early lead slip as the host Jets took small lead midway through the first half. After trailing 24-21, the Monarchs closed the opening half strong, going on a 35-17 run over the final 11:00 of action in the opening stanza to take a 56-41 lead at the half.

The offense continued to cruise in the second half as the Monarchs outscored the Jets by a 53-37 margin to earn the 31-point win. 

Joey Angok led Macomb with 23 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Caron Williams registered 18 points and four boards, while Tabari Howard posted 14 points and seven rebounds. The combination of Malachi Irving and Dante Wimberly netted 13 points each. 

Keithan Gilmore and Justin Gloster recorded eight points each, with Gilmore grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists. 

Tuesday's showing marked the best offensive output of the season for the Monarchs as the team shot 58.8% from the field and 45.8% from beyond the arc on 25 assists. Like the first meeting against the Jets, the Monarchs controlled the glass, outrebounding the Jackson, 42-18.

The Monarchs fast break attack was on full display as they outscored the Jets, 28-13.

The Monarchs will return to the campus of Wayne State University one final time next Tuesday (March 3) when they host St. Clair County Community College at 7 p.m. inside the Matthaei Center. The winner of the quarterfinal contest will move on to Mott Community College for the Great Lakes District B semifinals on March 5. The championship is set for March 7, also at Mott CC.
