GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Two wins on a Tuesday! Macomb Baseball traveled to Grand Rapids to take on Cornerstone University JV on Tuesday (April 14) and picked up a pair of wins to move to 21-14 overall. The Monarchs won game one, 14-1, before taking game two by a 5-3 final.
The Monarchs are scheduled to return to MCCAA Eastern Conference play Thursday in Warren for the beginning of a four-game set against Schoolcraft.
GAME ONE: Macomb 14, Cornerstone 1
The Monarchs broke open a 1-1 tie with a three third inning and tacked on two more the following frame to go ahead 6-1 at the midway point of the contest. Ahead by that same margin in the seventh, the Monarchs plated eight runs to leave no doubt in a 14-1 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Brett Leonard got the start in center field and had his best game at the collegiate level with a double and a triple as part of a 3-for-5 day with five RBIs, a pair of runs scored and a stolen base.
Marwynn Matthews Jr tied Leonard with three hits, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Buster Debol connected on his third home run of the campaign, a three-run shot in the third inning that stood as the game-winning hit.
Evan Morrison drove in a run and went 2-for-4 with a double, while
Austin Thorpe recorded an RBI double to round out the offensive leaders.
Kaiden Pollock got the starting nod and the win after punching out seven across four efficient innings of work. The win was Pollock's third of the season.
Nicholas Stempnik tossed two innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts and
Jacob Macks fanned a pair in one inning of no-hit ball.
GAME TWO: Macomb 5, Cornerstone 3
The Monarchs brought three runners across in the second and one more in the fourth and sixth innings to post a 5-3 game two victory.
Taylor Falls got the ball in game two and made the most of his opportunity by striking out seven across four shutdown innings of work. The strong start led Falls to his first collegiate win as the freshman from Port Huron Northern held the Golden Eagles scoreless while scattering three hits.
Connor Hayden came on for the final two innings and earned his first save in the two-run win.
Peyton Rich was 1-for-1 with a pair of RBIs on two sacrifice flies, while
Lochlan Stoudt had an RBI double for the Monarchs' lone extra-base hit of game two. Leonard continued to reach base all afternoon, walking three times while stealing three bases and getting hit-by-pitch once.
