Softball Sweeps SC4, Remains Firmly in Playoff Picture

Ariana Wlodeck earned a pair of wins in the circle for Macomb

WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Softball returned home to Warren on Thursday (April 23) and earned an impressive MCCAA Eastern Conference doubleheader sweep over St. Clair County Community College. The Monarchs won game one, 3-1, before earning a 12-2 run-rule victory in five innings in game two.

With the wins, the Monarchs remained firmly in the playoff hunt and moved to 13-16 overall and 9-10 in conference play.

GAME ONE: Macomb 3, SC4 1
The Monarchs trailed 1-0 early in the opener, but timely home runs by Aubrey Rich and Kailey Viviano secured the win for Macomb. Rich connected on a solo blast in the fourth inning to tie the game before Viviano played the role of hero late with a two-run home run in the sixth inning for the 3-1 win.

While the home runs stole the headlines, game one belong to starting pitcher Ariana Wlodeck. The sophomore was dialed from the beginning, tossing all seven innings while scattering five hits and striking out three for her eighth win of the season.

Offensively, Viviano added a double to pair with her game-winning home run to finish 2-for-3. Ryleigh Davis also finished game one 2-for-3 and added a run scored.

GAME TWO: Macomb 12, SC4 2 (5 inn.)
A four-run bottom of the third and seven-run outburst in the fourth propelled the Monarchs to their first run rule win since March 20 against Schoolcraft. The 12-2 victory kept the Monarchs in the third and final playoff spot out of the MCCAA East.

Rich was 3-for-4 at the top of the card with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Addison Wodowski was 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while Jacqueline Asmar was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs of her own. Samantha Consiglio joined the multi-hit game parade with a 2-for-3 effort and two RBIs, while Davis and Viviano went 2-for-3 and combined to score three runs.

After winning game one, Wlodeck returned to the circle in game two and hurled five strong innings to move to 9-4 on the campaign.

UP NEXT: Home again tomorrow
The Monarchs are home again tomorrow (April 24) against Oakland Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader in Warren is set for 1 p.m.
